[Albion] Does Potter really want this job?

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
I saw yesterday as a bit of a free hit due to the two day turnaround and can understand the changes. Frustratingly despite different personnel we caused Arsenal problems but as usual didn't do enough to hurt them.

.

As usual? Last season we beat Arsenal home and away. Six points that we cannot get this season.

To those who say he needs to persuade uncle Tony to get a striker - who?

I've tried to answer this a couple of times before. I think the ship sailed in the summer window. Dia or Nunez could have done a job for all anyone knows. Callum Wilson would have been better than anyone we've got. Watkins looks an upgrade on Connolly.

Then there's coaching. Apparently, you can't coach or train strikers. Except Bielsa has turned the laughing stock that was Pat Bamford into a Premier League machine, whilst Maupay has gone backwards since being dropped.

Perhaps, reading between the lines of your post, all of those I've mentioned in my first paragraph didn't fit with either the budget or the long term strategy. If that's true I'm going to hope this vaccination is as good as it's claimed, and start looking at train deals for Bristol, Cardiff and Preston for some time after August '21. I'll be able to go away again and won't be the one taking a hit of tens of millions of pounds.

I think Bloom should ask him if he actually wants the job because his whole demeanour and responses tells me he doesn’t. Where’s the passion? Where’s the positivity? You’re incredibly lucky to be manager of our club. Show it or just go. Why are you the best person for this job Graham? Give it to Bruno. He’s got more PL experience and personality to start with.

The problem with all the other teams losing is that it masks our ineptness. Carry on as we are and Fulham, West Brom or both will finish above us.

Hyypia all over again but reckon we'll leave it too late.

You maybe reading far too much into his press interviews, which he clearly doesn’t enjoy, and doesn’t see much value in.
To answer your question - he’s moved his whole life to Sussex, he’s acknowledged it’s a great opportunity. I don’t think he’s lost the players. Of course he wants the job.

Is he up to it? Does he have good enough players? These are the questions that matter

But the issue is that our performances have generally been excellent without the end product of goals. Is this all Potter's fault or is it the fault of not actually investing in a real quality striker PL proven and instead relying on Maupay and the younger and inexperienced Connoly? Ok we have Welbeck BUT there's no way he will be playing every game and yes we have Lallana and he will play even less and potentially not at all until Feb/March. No, the issue for me is the lack of a quality and proven striker and ridiculous number of missing the target is the reason why we are flirting with relegation and not because of Potter.

Arsenal and us are just the same. Good players but no direction.

We are unable to keep a clean sheet. This is Potter's domain. Set pieces etc. White and Dunk have been much coveted and are good enough to get more clean sheets. To simply blame a lack of a goalscorer is too simplistic although obviously a factor.

I would also take issue with 'our performances have generally been excellent'. Excellent in the middle third, not great in both boxes where it really matters. Potter does not seem the man to change this and has gone backwards imo and as our record suggests. I think he should go. I don't enjoy wtahcing us anymore. When we're infront we always look like we're going to throw it away, when we're behind we seem unlikely to break them down.

People have mentioned that he lost both parents. Obviously I know nothing about this but he's a bloke that has perpesctive (unlike myself who is absolutely gutted that we can't win!) and may explain his lack of appeared fight. He seems secure in himself and the players after winning ONE home game all year. That's not right and infruiating.

I wouldn't say he has lost the players but I'm not sure they really believe in him. Maupay isn't the same. Connelly has no confidence. Ryan is a shadow of himself. Dunk is ok then poor. Alzate has regressed for reasons we do not know. Macallister shoots when he should pass because he wants to play (wants to play in the first team not the league cup line up last night), Trossard sulks and moans despite having very little impact on a game. I don't think Potter gives the belief or has the personality to change this. Somethings got to give. The worst scenario would an enforced break and staying with Potter imo. Potter with a stiker could be the change but I just want someone else in charge who shows some belief and personality and doesn't pick AJ or Macallister up front!!!

I've been concerned since his comments after thats econd half V West Brom. It was diabolical yet he picked a fight with non-existant fans. Where did that come from? Who does he think we are? He was resposnible for not beating WBA with his crappy tactics and half time team talk and then not making the subs.

I don't think I've read anywhere that you can't coach or train strikers.. but that doesn't mean that they don't have lean spells or suffer from lack of self-confidence. Peter Ward - a legend.. struggled to score in the top flight. Bobby Zamora. Torres a goal machine at Liverpool, shadow of himself at Chelsea. Benteke. Even Zaha last season. It can happen.. Bamford is in a great moment.. El Ghazi is now - same coach as before.. but they too may suffer in the future. Sheff Utd last season vs. this. Burnley also been struggling for goals.
Don't get me wrong, the relationship between player and coach is important, it has to be. But a poor run of form for strikers is not necessarily a symptom of the coaching, unless we weren't creating chances, but I think we agree that we are. Maupay, Trossard have scored goals at this level. Maupay has scored some this season, Trossard hasn't. His "strikes" vs. Man United, may just have been the catalyst for something.. either a run of scoring form or frustration, and subsequent lack of confidence that means he is over-thinking, snatching, whatever you like.. The narrative around the team (Media, Fans) is that we struggle to score.. every missed chance compounds that, however hard, and the cycle is hard to stem - keep working hard and believe that it will happen is the message.

I do agree with you but - had we buried 10% more of our chances we wouldn't be fretting over our position or Potter as much.

Excellent performances? You must be watching a different team!

What really surprises me is how often commentators will say that Brighton are "good to watch". Who is enjoying watching this Brighton team? Not people who want to see us win, for starters. I wouldn't be watching this team if it wasn't mine.
