Does anyone remember Watford v Brighton when Archie McCauley was manager?

I was there, Albion 6-0 (Adrian Thorne scored five of them) huge crowd, a night to remember.

We also had won 1-0 at Watford earlier that season.

Here's hoping for a repeat later today

Perhaps you can confirm something for me that has always puzzled me. At that game the ground itself was full and most children of which I was one and you being 4 years younger than me probably did the same and sat on the cinder track around the outside of the pitch. People I speak to say that it could never have happened but I am sure that it did.

Yes they did, it was fairly common in those days. I and few hundred others got hoisted on to the turnstile rooves around the ground for that particular game which was a great view over everybody heads, no health and safety in 1958. It was a warm, sunny afternoon and a tremendous atmosphere.

Just a pity we lost the first game in the old second division 9-0 to Middlesbrough the following season with a certain Brian Clough scoring a hatful. He also scored five or something like that in our home game against them which we lost 6-4. You don't get games like that anymore.

The promotion game against Watford is the one that I fully recollect. Great spring evening if I remember. Was there with one of my first girl friends. Hugged and kissed every time we scored. Wonderful memories. Goldstone at its best.

I can definitely confirm that we occasionally sat on the cinder track, usually when there was an extra large crowd. The main concern was that no-one sat any where close to the goal for fear of them being struck by the ball.

Apart from Adrian Thorne scoring 5 goals, my favourite recollection was of my old Dad, along with 7 of his mates, having a sweepstake for half-a-crown, (12 and a half P in todays money). They picked a name out of a hat from the three half backs and five forwards and whenever a goal was scored, the holder of the goal scorer would receive a half a crown from each one of the others. My old man drew Adrian Thorne and went home with nearly half a weeks wages in his pocket.

I loved that ground.
