As an occasional sufferer, Boots own ulcer gel is much better at avoiding that hop-around-in-agony stinging feeling that freshly-applied Bonjela induces. A fine scotch single malt whisky swilled around the mouth and over the little sod also works wonders - it certainly smarts a bit at first but you do get some payback for that on the taste buds.

I've found that if you get one, the best way to deal with it is to apply a small amount of good quality toothpaste to your brush, wet it slightly, then apply it directly onto the ulcer with a gentle brushing motion. Hurts like crazy but the brush opens up the infected area and the toothpaste gets in deep and does the rest.

try "Adcortyl in Orabase for Mouth Ulcers". You have to ask for it at chemists. It's a paste (I think this was referred toin an earlier comment) so you dont lose half of it like a gel when applying to the affected area.
It will probably clear it up in about 24 hours if you haven't cured it already.

its a zinc deficiency - so have some zinc tablets as well...just like cold sores...and as everyone has said its usually being tired and run down that does it..

bonjela is ok but your mouth gets used to it, put some bonjela on it just before you eat - that way it won't be so painful eating...best by far is to gargle salt water and have a good nights kip...
