Dodgy Stewarding

Mendoza

NSC's Most Stalked
It is spreading to cricket!
What a :censored: the steward at Lords was today

Hoggard hit to the boundary for 4
the ball stays by the advertising hoarding, no ball boy or steward to throw it back, no England player went to fetch it

A fan the steps over the hoarding and throws the ball back to Hoggard.

A steward then scampers round the boundary in his "Green Team" jacket and throws the guy out the stand for going on the pitch.

Hoggard then has a go at the steward instead of bowling his next delivery and Ian Botham left the commentary box to do the same thing

Stewards

yeah he got back in, to a standing ovation from the whole ground

Common sense prevailed then, I trust the steward was dismissed.

They are all like that, i went on friday and a kid inthe school group near me dropped his ball over the fence, a reasonable distance from the field of play. Kid hops over to pick up ball and one of the Green Team muppets tries to grab the kid and haul in away, thankfully a more senior member of staff stepped in an said Green Team meber was quickly removed from his post

The sad thing is that if he had sat there and done nothing then people whould have said that he was out of order for not getting it.

The stewards at Lord's are notoriously the most miserable, nit-picking, arrogant, power-mad set of grumpy bastards at any sports venue anywhere. I've had several run-ins with them in the past and it sounds like they're not getting any better.

They have been known to refuse to let players in when they've forgotten their accreditation. Where do they find them?

Yep, it takes a special kind of person to be a steward. I can't believe they do it solely for the money as they tend to be paid pennies. Many of them tend to be jumped up nobodies on a power trip. Few show any common sense, replying to any dispute with the old: "I'm only doing my job line." Myself and son attempted to enter a large non league ground at Easter with a half drunk plastic bottle of mineral water. "I can't let you in with that as the seal has been broken" was the reply of Mr Orange coat on the gate. When I asked the question: " So if it was unopened you'd be ok with that" and "I guess you're more concerned that I'll tip the contents over somebody rather than actually lob the bottle", guess what his reply was??

Having said that, the Withdean stewards are more laid back than many of their equivalent's at other grounds.

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
I got refused entry at Lords for dressing as a Dwarf. My six other Dwarves and Snow White were also turned away. If you saw 6 angry dwarves, one grumpy dawrf and a transvestite in the shape of Snow White @ the Zimbabwe game a few years ago, that was me!

Stewards can be very over officious and do not use their common sense. One thing they must always remember is never to antagonise people.

I worked as a Steward at Cheltenham and Wembley during my Uni days, coupled with various events, and I always tried to come across as helpful and caring, rather than some egomaniac on a power trip, like one chap. Incidentally, I never had any trouble and he used to have problems every single game. :tosser:

Bear in mind, the stewards at Lords are only doing the dirty work as bid by the chinless wonders in the pavilion. They're the real culprits. It's not the individual stewards - it's been going on at that one ground for far too long for that.

I think it's a combination of both. After all, most cricket clubs are run by chinless wonders and the stewarding is generally pretty good - the stewards at Sussex are pretty decent and the ones at the Oval are always friendly.

There's definitely a culture at Lord's that attracts the most officious and petty-minded people to be stewards.
