Up against Huw Edwards non custodial sentence it does seem a tad harsh, but clearly they wanted to send out a message.

Asking for a friend...........

There are only three groups of people who can enter your property without permission, HMRC, The Coroner and The Gas Board, so whilst punishing some of the sources, as in this case, will they ever be able to ever prosecute anyone for having, and watching, such a said firestick?

How would they catch you without a warrant to come in your house, and Policing that would be a needle in a haystack job surely?

The Gas Board? :lolol:

The article mentions a closed FB page where undercover National Trading Standards did a test purchase. There's no mention of breaking and entering.

Yes, gas companies can, if they suspect a gas leak, force entry without a warrant in order to make safe. The Fire Brigade have similar powers.

If you don’t use a VPN they could identify the use of one of these fire sticks via your ISP. Also through financial records if you’ve paid for it via PayPal or similar.

It’s highly unlikely they’ll be coming after the end user though. They want to stop the source so will be coming after those supplying the sticks, the software and hosting the streams etc.

I know but the 'Gas Board' hasn't been called that since 1972. I know it's common usage but it ages the OP.

Incidentally, a colleague of mine spent his entire working day, sitting in courts waiting for warrants for meter men to go and disconnect supplies.

Sorry, but that's never happening ever! A dodgy firestick user would be nowhere near the threshold required for the police to apply for authority to do that, it may come as a surprise to some but the police can't just go digging around your ISP and Internet usage and financial records without first applying for authority via a dedicated process and I can say through experience that this is rigorously scrutinised and applied and often denied in even the most serious cases. Dodgy firestick users have absolutely nothing to worry about.

A friend recently asked for my help setting up a dodgy firestick as they're not good with gadgets and the like. The thing is their partner is in the police and has been for at least 20 years. They didn't seem at all worried about it.

Would this just be like bootleg records, where its not illegal to buy, but it is illegal to sell.
My understanding is that both purchasing/consuming 'dodgy' IPTV streams and bootleg records are potentially criminal acts, but in reality in neither case is there any significant likelihood of the police pursuing it or pressing charges.

The relevant laws for IPTV (selling and purchasing) are detailed here:

3000+ ‘customers’ in his illegal Facebook group doesn’t sound too clever. Rightly jailed therefore IMO. If he’s made £50 on each say, and not paying taxes either, that’s a lot of loot. We’re not talking petty crime here.

Yep.

And for anything sufficiently serious, a VPN isn't going to hide you from the authorities.
