Very sad to see. I rarely go in to brighton now and when I do I think what a tip. The council really need to do something about it but hey, as long as people keep going there they probably won't.

It's always been a tip. It's just you didn't mind it when you were younger.

I get that, the seafront was always good though. West Street went very downhill when the concrete bollards went in. It would be good if at least during spring and summer jet wash and cleaners were on the streets in the tourist places every morning. As I say that, a street cleaner has gone past, I'm in Turkey...

Another centre of Brighton specialist goes. Aird & Co of Bond Street for tools, Clifford’s for car bits in Church Street. The latter gave it go in School Road, Hove for a long period, eventually succumbing to Amazon etc,
I left Brighton 7 years ago but grew up and had lived there since 1967 - I can’t remember all the old independent shops that disappeared- there were so many.

I remember the old guy that ran a small bicycle repair shop in Baker Street - I took my bike to him for years - he died and the shop was bought out, modernised and enlarged.

I think the biggest personal loss for me personally were shops like Rave On and Rounder Records which specialised in the music I was in to..

Rounder was a huge loss. I started buying records in there when I was 16 or 17 and carried on right up until they closed, I was also a member of their record club which introduced me to so much good music.

I often wonder what happened to Johnny and Steve.

I'm possibly having a brain fart here but going back 45 years or so I've a vague memory of buying fishing tackle and bait from there, not your usual stock for a hardware store but I can't shift the cobwebs enough to verify this absurd memory.

The other store I would miss would be the Nut & Bolt store along Portland Road Hove, not sure how it survives, but very useful shop

Shame to read this they were always such a good store with stock and staff. Even sadder to see as someone who still has a family run business in Blatchington road Hove still going after 50 years !

Found this when having a sort out. Bought on one one of my random strolls a year or so back. Also purchased a few small screws and was asked how many I needed - only a few and I think he charged by weight and 9cost a few pence.

I am in the Northern heights of the county and we have a an Aladdins cave shop of a similar nature. It must be doing ok as it has several branches. I know that Heathfield have a couple of proper ironmongers plus Trading 4 U which stocks numerous similar stuff

They made a fortune out of me, loved Rounder. The owner is still youngish, he must’ve been early 20’s when he took over Fine Records and made it a great dance/imports store. Runs his still successful shop in central London, lives in Hove.
