There are plenty of good reasons for having a good search facility, so what is the reason for suspending it?

With 100 to 300 live threads per day it is almost impossible to keep track without searching.

Victim of success?

It would save repeat threads popping up all the time - people could find an old thread on the subject and bounce it rather than clogging up the board with lots of new threads on previously covered topics.

Isn't that right Turkey? Eh? EH?!

If it did cost any more in bandwidth then loads of people have offered to pay £12 a year to Bozza to have a fully functional Nsc with ALL the smilies and the search facility.

Bozza?

Sorry to go slightly off topic here. I can't/don't really want to access NSP but I'd just like to say that a Doozer would absolutely kick Bob the Builder's arse.

The reason is that with the Search option operational, our hosts were being pushed to the point where our business was not welcome.

This is not due to bandwidth issues but due to server usage. Every time someone submits a post, the site has to update an index of every word in that post with 4 letters or more. It does this in order to make the search function work. This causes NSC to be very server intensive to the detriment of sites that share our same host.

Basically NSC probably needs a dedicated server. For this you are looking at £80-100 a month or so. That's opposed to the current £25 a month or so. Frankly I can not justify spending the extra. If NSC punters wanted this, then contributions would be the only way forward, I think. Advertising just does not pay enough.

If we had our own server, we could possibly recoup money by selling some of our server space to other sites etc. Would need to be looked at.

Would it be possible to ONLY have a search for member posts, or threads by title (or again by member name)?

I can't remember where and in what threads I post, so have trouble looking in on threads to find progress or responses.
It WAS useful to track down interesting threads rather than seeking them out by going down the pages and opening anything I susupect might have been previously interesting.

The answer is simple folks, dig deep for a pound a month and we can search as much as we want.

Not much to ask is it?

A system of very modestly priced standing orders to help Bozza. Totally anonymous and no personal benefits of doing that, just to satisfy those who moan about "begging bowls" and "you're saying you're a better fan than me" blah blah.

At the end of the day, the search thing isn't a big deal but maybe some financial indepedence for NSC might be.

Definitely worth looking at.
