...with a different manager?

We didn't take enough strikers, so there was no way we were going to win a penalty shoot-out. Wrong tactics, wrong line-ups, wrong substitutions. Surely we had the players to win it.

Yes. Our players are the equal to the others I have seen in the world cup. We beat what was againgst us, despite Sven best endeavouirs. Our Team our players have the ability to beat Portugal, who did not impress me today. Wer can beat France. Brazil? On our day Yes.

Germany we can do.

So Yes we could have won it.

Having watched tonights game it became blindingly obvious why the Premiership is so good, soley because of the number of class foreign players in it. No England were never in with a realistic chance of winning whoever managed us. Would have been good to see an injection of adventure in the team and gone out playing good football rather than heroically again. A decent manager would have given us the opportunity.

On NSC for over two decades...
The trouble we had was trying to have a system to fit the players, rather than fitting the players to the system.

Trying to accomodate Gerrard, Lampard and Beckham in the same side was taking it too far, and left us badly short up front.

We know how to win a world cup, you take the best players who play the positions for their clubs and you play them in those positions for their country, and if that means leaving one of Gerrard or Lampard on the bench then so be it, it just means you have a strong bench.

No, I don't think England are good enough, that's the harsh truth. For me, scapegoats like Sven, Rooney's red card, Ronaldo are not convincing explanations.

My main disappointing thing is that England's match-winners like Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham and Rooney (although he has an excuse because of his lack of match fitness) have just not been up to do the job. The idea that England have a golden generation of midfielders is just not true, IMHO.

I think Sven can only be properly judged by what we see now from McClaren. If he gets these players performing better, then we will know Sven f***ed up. If not, then I think a more balanced judgment will have to reached about his time in charge.

How would i know?I'm pissed.
Yesterday was a blessing in disguise............France and especially Zidane would have destroyed us in the semi, and that would have been harder to take.

I think they could have made the final at least. They were grinding out the results even if it wasn't pretty to watch, and even going into the penalty shoot-out they were in with a chance. OK, they looked dreadfully threadbare up front, but if Gerard and Lampard had their shooting boots on, they could have hacked out at least one more 1-0 win cos the defence was sound enough.
