Brighton have lost motivation - De Zerbi​

Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Roberto De Zerbi says his players have lost motivation since going out of the Europa League and seeing another chance of qualifying for Europe via a high league finish disappear.

A 4-1 defeat on aggregate against Roma in the last 16 of the Europa League in March has been followed by a run of four league defeats and two draws including today's 3-0 loss at Bournemouth.

De Zerbi, asked if a tough situation was due to injuries or other factors as well, said: "Injuries, for sure. Motivation as well.

"Motivation in football, I think (that is) 80 per cent of my work and in my time we kept a big challenge, a big target. In this moment, finishing the Europa League, too many points from the Europe position in the table, we are working for not a clear target.

"It can happen. It's normal, but I cannot accept a game without soul, because we are Brighton and we have to keep respect for ourselves, for our club, for our fans, and I am sorry for that.

"I am suffering a lot, but I have worked in football for 30 years and I know it can happen. We have to stop this moment quickly."

Pretty obvious he is referring to the lack of incentives isn’t it given Europe’s gone, no cups to fight for, only a mid-low table finish as I said on the other “Loss of Motivation thread”. Incentives motivate. Hard to motivate when the incentives you had just a few months ago have gone.

A major part of what de Zerbi is about is inspiring and egging on not just the squad but the whole Club to be ambitious, punch above our weight, go for dreams and targets we’ve never before believed we could reach. That’s been the constant narrative from PBOBE, “ Roberto pushes all of us to do better”. That’s been a lot of personal energy spent since last May to carry players with him on this dream, to try and get the players he needs from a Club set in it’s drip by drip ‘sustainable trajectory’ ways, so those dreams RDZ has for the Club could be realised - RDZ is a force of nature but understandably running low on steam - he has no targets left at his disposal this season with which to bang the drum.

I strongly suspect Roberto will not want to leave the Club at an end of a season like this but will prefer to stay and work with Tony, Paul and the players he is obviously committed to, and strengthen the squad in the hope we will qualify again next year. I think he would want to leave after a successful season not one that has fizzled out like this and I also believe if he stays, which looks likely imo, Tony and PB would find ways to keep him grounded in reality without crushing his ambitious personality.

I personally think we should wait another season. At the end of the day, if we really want to keep him, we need to back him and give him the quality he needs to play the style he wants. We have seen a glimpse of an unhappy RDZ which clearly unsettles everyone from the fans to the players. I have a lot of love for RDZ but it did get a little too close to Poyet at times.

Maybe so, but it’s our last game of the season and if you look at as a whole, it has been fantastic, watching Brighton play European football was something I never thought I’d witness and we beat every team we faced at least once. We are not the only team to suffer after playing in Europe, but if we beat ManU tomorrow we will finish in the top half of the table.

Why can’t we celebrate tomorrow, get behind the players , the manager and the club that created great memories that will live with us for ever.

I just don’t think tomorrow we should not worry about if he stays or if he goes, we have no control over that anyway.

I think he actually does want to stay and turn us into a club that is what he thinks it could be,I'm not sure he really does understand fully our model and he wants to change it,no harm in that,I love a manager with ambition and boy is he ambitious.
You really have to remember how injuries have conspired to scupper the squad this season,Solly was unplayable until he got injured and the list grew from there.
It would be naive of him to think we're going to start splashing out 50 million for every player,but I do think the board will back him to the tune of 4 players in for a 100 million or so and hope all the long term injuries clear up for the new season,so in short yes I do think he wants to be here and if we are to progress again next season I'd want him here to achieve it.

Feel like the recent change of tune is just a PR move to make good before leaving. No one will want the overriding memory of RDZ to be one of a petulant quitter. A bit of a PR zhuzh will help, then leave for Bayern. Those rumours seem to be getting more and more substance.

I think our football could do with evolving a little more, with or without RDZ. We’ve been on the front foot for a few years and it’s been great watching opposition and rivals desperately trying to play catch up, but now we’ve got the whole league (bar Dyche) playing out from the back. When the norm for a goal kick on the Hackney Marsh is to take short goal kicks it’s time for the taste makers to come up with a new idea.

I don’t know what it is with so many on here … last season was our best ever. This year we had a terrific campaign in European football against some of the best teams in the competition. We have been dogged with injuries but seen the emergence of some Young promising talent. We can still finish 10th in the Premier league….and still you are discontent and want more !
It is a very easy answer to say “ Get a new manager “ if things are not as you hope … but be careful what you wish for. It does not always produce instant results…often worse .
de Zerbi is , I believe a good , perhaps brilliant manager . There are many factors in a clubs success not just the head coach.

This is something that has been going through my mind since he started coming out with his "I'll talk to Tony and the club and we'll make a decision then" guff about whether he'll be here next season or not. You can have the best plans and intentions for the transfer window but absolutely nothing is guaranteed unless and until a player signs on the dotted line.

I'm sure Albion had targets they wanted to sign both last summer AND in January that just didn't pan out, for whatever reason. Tony, Paul, David Weir and Grumpy Italian Bloke could sit down on Monday and agree a brilliant transfer strategy for this summer - which then goes tits up for all sorts of reasons, none of which are under Albion's control. So does GIB f*** off on Saturday August 31 when the agreed targets aren't on board (and half the injured players are still on the treatment table)?
