I've been a republican for 40 years and flatly refuse to sing a verse of GSTQ.

I do however sing lustily along to Mae hen wlad fy nhadau

yes but that is because you are welsh part of G.B.and not part of the united kingdom.

you are a principality, you have CHAS and he is your monarch not liz

they are answerable to George Bush just as much as the monarchy !!!

True, sadly.

I can see your point about paying their own way, but do they have the capability of doing so? I am not quite sure how they could. Certainly the key members of the Crown spend a large amount of time traipsing round the country or hosting guests/ambassadors from all over the world with full schedules to go out and earn a wage.

I do agree that the 'klingons' should not be on the 'gravy train' i.e. Princess Michael etc.

that bit about anyone who lives in 'our' country should love 'our' queen is absolute bollocks.

am not english, just living here temporarily and have never felt the need to sing 'your' anthem, nor profess my love for your queen and this 'great' nation. i know the chorus bit is god save our gracious queen but that is probably the only line i know. am very much a republican though.

i know both 'our' anthems by heart, one is a little love ditty that is not especially rousing and the other is marginally more rousing.

i wonder about the footballers though - i mean i couldn't care less if they sing their anthem or not, english or otherwise. i just wonder why they don't. not knowing the words, not 'believing' in it all, just can't be arsed, daydreaming about post match food. i wonder how many people know it from start to finish. where is it taught? do they learn it in schools? (not in my kids) in egypt it was the first and last thing we did in school every day.

In Nigeria ( my wife is Nigerian ) the national anthem is taught from the off in school and sung at every school assembly and at every possible opportunity. Certainly rolled out much more than we do in England. This is obviously to try to forge national unity in a nation still absorbed in tribalism to this very day. There's over 300 tribal groups in Nigeria, and Nigeria was of course an enforced European creation ( name allegedly derived from Lord Lugard's wife saying " I can't live in Niger area" ).

I seem to remember an issue being made here once of Gary Neville never singing God Save Our Queen ? Not sure if this is bacuse of his political views or not ?

no maybe not and I'm not gonna argue with your beliefs

however I would curiously like to know if 'to protect queen and country' was the sole reason you signed up to the armed forces, because thats generally in my experiences not the main reason a lot of people sign up !!!

F.f.S. they have robbed enough money out of this country to keep a small african state going for years. they even own the f***ing seashore you paddle in

they need no more money from us AND they can even afford to support princess michael themselves.

the unemployable mob should just spend what they have untill it is all gone(about the same time the sun burns out and we all die anyway)

i sing it - i have also developed a tendency to sing the american national anthem, followed by large wooos, high fives, cries of 'alright' and a chant of 'u-s-a u-s-a u-s-a' whenever i have had a bit to drik

Difficult to argue with that then!

I personally do not think that 61p per person is badly spent, but perhaps we do need to reassess things with a distinct lack of public money at the moment and a looming (potential) 'credit crunch'.

I was too young to bother gauging the reaction of the public to the Royal Family and vice versa during the 90s recession and would be interested to hear about that.

Money could always be better spent which is the case with many things. Their benefits are unquantifiable really.

Just found this with various different viewpoints.

BBC NEWS | Have Your Say | Is the Royal Family worth £36.7m?

This did make me laugh...

I see it cost £45,000 for Charles to travel by train from Aberdeen to Plymouth. That's in line with normal UK rail fares, so well done Charles for taking standard class off-peak!

Why has it never been properly challenged? I was never a huge fan of the monarchy, but gained a bit more respect for them with that TV series that ran recently. Could well have been some very convincing propoganda. Perhaps we do need to reassess their financial status.

HUH UN peacekeeping forces are nothing to do with any country!!! We never supported anyone we stopped ALL the opposing factors attacking civilians.

George Bush Snr was never involved in the decision to send troops in

:thud: It's nothing to do with any government. It's down to the United Nations

And we removed a damn sight more weapons from the Muslims than any other faction whilst our tour was out there
