Lewes District Council have just given planning permission for a new Aldi in Lewes. Some interesting planning conditions have been set ...

No tobacco products
No loose confectionery
No magazines
No newspapers
No greeting cards
No lottery tickets or scratch cards
No more that 850 lines at any one time
No delicatessen counter
No in-house bakery
No fish counter
No meat counter

Only two of those could be an issue, newspapers and 850 products, both of which Aldi do/could do. I've never seen the rest in any Aldi store!

We do an Aldi run once a month, stocking up on their frozen lamb mince and dried tripe sticks. The dogs love both things and don't give a damn where it comes from! We usually come away with other stuff as well, don't have a problem with any of it.

I like the way they brand stuff really similar to the "brand products", ie. same design and colouring as "head and shoulders" but named "hair and shoulders".

Certain products [like all supermarkets] are superb, the black olive bread sticks, Serrana jamon, stuffed peppers [from cold shelf] take some beating. Oh...they also sell Batemans Ales - bloody good beer!

Nothing wrong with Aldi or Lidl for that matter.

You just have to try things that are not regular brand names, but are usually equal or better quality than you find in Tesco or any of the other big boys.

There is one just north of Porstlade station. I would recommend the German meat balls with a name beginning with K. In weekdays there a few queues.

Why can a council set themselves up as the judge of what a supermarket can or cannot sell. I would have thought that the answer to the planning application is Yes or No without local 2 bit councillors becoming little hitlers.

There's no such thing as a planning application that is ever unconditionally Yes or No!

But I can't really see why Aldi are bothering with a supermarket in Lewes if all these restrictions apply. Best to put it somewhere it's likely to be appreciated and where they can trade sensibly.

I can fully accept the planning application being conditional on size, car park opening hours etc but not on what can or cannot be sold and I would agree if I was in charge of Aldi I would say sod you Lewes and put one in Burgess Hill, Moulsecombe, any where but Lewes.
