[Misc] Do you read?

Yes, I read lots and reread books, and always have done. My Dad used to say, you're never bored if you have a book to read.

I tried kindles etc but cannot get on with them, so it has to be the old fashioned way.

One of my best friends doesn’t read. He’s an intelligent fella, 40 years a senior engineer, degree, etc, etc, but he just can’t sit and read. He has beach holidays, he can sit ons beach all day doing nothing, but, just can’t read.

Weird.

Yes.

I currently have two books (one physical and one Kindle) on the go:

- Byzantium: The Decline & Fall by John Julius Norwich
- Sea Wolves by Tim Clayton

I mainly enjoy non-fiction, particularly history of various kinds, but I'll give most things a try.

I find I need to research and process via other books or the internet and I seldom read a whole book.

I dont think this is normal but it is me.

I do the same with non-fiction - I'll read a passing mention or reference in a book that catches my attention for whatever reason, then end up disappearing down an online (usually starting with Wiki) black hole trying to find more about it.

If you struggle to find time, I would recommend setting yourself a goal of something like 20 pages a day. You could read 10 pages when you first get up, or while your eating your breakfast and then 10 pages before going to bed. If you start by reading smaller manageable chunks, it starts to become easier and you'll probably find that soon you're able to find more time in your day to fit reading in. Also once you start getting used to reading chunks of 10 pages, you'll probably aslo find you want to read for longer periods of time, and quite often you find ways to. Once you get in the routine it gets easier.
Thanks for the advice. I will give it a try.

i read but not enough. Slowly working my way through Time Magazines 100 greatest english language novels alphabetically (with a few diversions). Last one completed was "The Corrections". Next to go will be the Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon. Currently diverted onto a book named the Berlin Bunker which is about the Hitler's final days etc - I'll finish that over the next few days

Usually read about 25 books a year. Read 7 already in 2021. Reading is great, favourite sort of entertainment.

Yes, I read every day. I’ve been a bookworm since my age was in single figures. I usually have one fiction and one non-fiction book on the go as well as some short stories.

To be honest mate apart from books I’ve had to read to pass an exam I haven’t read anything really.

I would recommend buying the first one to give it a try.
Just in case you didn’t know these books are fiction and set in Brighton and the surrounding areas, pretty easy to read as most chapters are short.
Depends if you like crime fiction I suppose.

I usually read before I go to sleep, I try to not look at my phone or iPad for an hour before bed, I find reading helps me switch off and sleep.

Surely the “do you read” and “what are you reading” threads are one and the same. If you don’t read, then you’re not going to post what you’re currently reading and if you do read then surely you’ll want to let everyone know what books you’re currently reading.

Whilst I consume a lot of written content - long-form articles and blogs on a wide range of subjects, I've not been a regular book reader for some years, and it's something I'm attempting to put right this year.

If you struggle to find time, I would recommend setting yourself a goal of something like 20 pages a day. You could read 10 pages when you first get up, or while your eating your breakfast and then 10 pages before going to bed.

This is exactly the goal I set myself this year - to read 10 pages of fiction and 10 pages of non-fiction a day. I didn't read a single page in January so I was already 600 pages in "debt" on February 1st, but I've caught that up now.

I tend to use the kindle app on my iPad as, although I do have a physical kindle device it's quite old and doesn't have a backlight. As I tend to read in bed when Mrs B is asleep, I don't want the bedroom light on.

Most posters haven’t said which book they are currently reading, although a lot have mentioned genres and the form of books they read, I.e. physical books or ebooks.
My question to start the thread was are you reading more during lockdown, even, have you started reading, nothing about which books you’re reading.

I am currently trying to read the excellent’From the gutter to the stars’ by Simon Medhurst, (NSC name, LeTiss)
However, the text is so small, I’m having trouble actually reading it. More my fault than the books.:)

yes,I read a lot of books but not much fiction.
I enjoy popular science, religion and spirituality, and ancient alien theory and a bit of history if I'm interested in the subject.
If I do read fiction then I read the older stuff rather than any modern authors.
Not that the modern authors are bad but they tend to do series rather than a big novel these days and I lose track of which book it is in the series.
But I only read in the summer because I prefer the natural light in the evenings to read rather than light bulbs.
Winter is PlayStation and films but this is about the time of year I start to get an interest in reading books again.
