My next door neighbour recently got divorced but as she didn't like her maiden name she changed her surname to Pink because she likes the colour pink. Bizarre.

My sister was similar. When she got divorced she didn't want to go back to her maiden name so she changed it to 'Buchanan' - because she said it sounded hard! I said it that was the effect she wanted why not go for something obvious like Ms Dontfuckaboutwithmemate

Having worked in the legal side of Banking for 20 years, I can confirm that, yes, if you just want to change your name and you have no to intention to decieve anyone, then you just write a letter to anyone who has a record of you (DWP, HMRC, Doctors, Hospitals, Bank, Council, Employers, Life assurance Cos, Pension providers etc) advising them of the change & the date of that change. It is really important to tell life assurance companies & anyone else who may make a payout to your relatives or estate after death, as the name on your death certificate will have to match the name on your policy, unless you have told them otherwise.

Whe I got divorced I reverted to my maiden name & just wrote to people to tell them. The only trouble I had was when I got married again - the registrar said that I must include my previous married name or else future generations would not be able to fiind me if they researched the family tree!
