Do you give blood? And if not, why not?

I gladly would do, but I'm not allowed to.

The rules are changing I think? Hopefully will encourage a few more donors.

Only thing this thread looks like to me is from the OP is, look at me I give blood if you don't you better be feeling guilty about it. Correct me if I'm wrong please!!!
Consider yourself corrected.
Although you've been corrected, to be honest, so what if it was? Giving blood is something to be proud of, and if this thread makes another person do it, great.

If the sessions are always booked up they can't be doing that bad.

the sessions I've attended over the years there have been less & less people so now they seem to have less sessions.

I'm not allowed to because I've received blood transfusions in the past. :)

That said, I hope the change to which you are referring does help increase thr donor population.

Really? I believe the current rules (which I think are changing anyway) dictate that if you're a man who's ever had sex with a man, with a prostitute, or if you're male or female & have ever had sex with someone from most of Africa, then you can't donate. Or if you've ever injected drugs. It's not that monk-ish :)

It has changed now. Men can donate blood as long as it's been at least 12 months since they last had sex with another man.
Give Blood - Deferral of Men who have Sex with Men from Blood Donation

Full list of what keeps you ineligible:
Give Blood - Who Can't Give Blood

I'm on my bronze card (10-24 donations), and have been donating for 4 or 5 years. Next due just before christmas.

Silver badge - 8 more donations for the Gold, mum can't, wife can't, sister can't due to transfusions, cancers etc - so fully dependant on me

O Neg common as muck

sense of welbeing, giving somthing back and eating Burbons til they come out of your ears - is ace

started bullying my buudies to give a few years back - simple technique - i would by 2 of the most horibble shots in a bar, put them on the table, when asked by the group who are they for ?, the reply was - whoever of you lot that has the longest time lapse from when you last gave blood

first couple of times i had to gio back to the bar for a few more shots until the "nevers" turned into "six months ago"

From what I've read they treat it like a tattoo or piercing... you have to wait TWELVE months since the incident till you can, bit crap really.

You should not be allowed to receive blood or donated organs unless you are a registered donor yourself!

Obviously those turned down for all reasons above with blood donations are fair enough.

I am due to give blood for the 4th time in about a week. I don't always book ahead when I do it but it annoys me that I have been turned away before for not booking, and even when I have booked it sometimes I am seen up to an hour after my appointed time. I understand they are busy it is just frustrating to plan your day around something where you have no idea what time it will happen.

Side question now, where do private practices get their blood from? Do the National Blood Service sell them our blood? If so, then is that morally wrong? they advertise about playing your part etc but if they sell it then that seems a bit wrong. Not that I know if they do it or not, and even if they do I wouldn't personally mind, just thought I would throw it out there to see what people think.

I gave blood in England, but it is because I lived in England in the 70's that I can't give blood here.

I did it once, then lay down for 10 minutes, felt very faint and promptly threw up all over the floor of the local British Legion - got a very withering look from the old dear in charge and decided that it wasn't really for me.

In my experience, I have played football every time after giving blood and also worked on bars pulling pints with my arm that it was extracted from. I have never felt queasy at all but after looking at others comments, it seems I am lucky and in the minority to not have any negative consequences from blood giving.

Lucky me

I think the rule is being changed to "If you haven't had sex for a year". Although how the hell they are going to police that is beyond me.
