Do you clap at the end of films in the cinema?

Went to see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on Saturday (and a very enjoyable film it was too), but was quite taken aback at the end when about half the audience started clapping!

Admittedly I don't go to the pictures very often, but I'm not sure I've ever been in a cinema where a film got a round of applause at the end. Is it a common thing?

No I do not!whats the point? The actors/film producers etc. don't know you're clapping.I don't give my television a round of applause for a particularly good episode of Come dine with me,why clap at a Cinema screen?

Only if really moved to. I think I have only applauded at the end of moulin rouge and one other film but I can't remember which it was. Maybe not the best film but the music and the general attack on the sense n that moment the whole cinema applauded.

Movies are meant to take you on a journey, to give you an emotional experience, and if it does that well enough, sometimes applauding is something one is moved to do. I don't see why people are so hung up when it happens. You don't get hung up on people laughing at films, crying at them, jumping or screaming at them, why get worked up when they applaud it?

Inception. Stunned silence followed by a huge round of applause. It was a PROPERLY amazing experience so yes, I showed my appreciation. As someone above said, if not clap, why scream or laugh?

Clapping can just as much be a natural reaction to show your satisfaction.

Has she ever applauded you though, in fact have you both ever broken out in spontaneous applause??

I was there on Saturday too, and asked my girlfriend why everyone was clapping. "They always do this at the Duke of York" she replies.

Really???

It's an American phenomenon that's worked it's way over here in recent times - Odeon, Duke of Porks or Cineworld. In the States I've been in cinemas where they've clapped and whooped at trailers for films.

On more than one occasion I've been on a plane and a bunch of people (Americans) have applauded when it's touched down on the runway.

Yay! Go pilot! Way to do your actual job!

I must say I have done this, only once mind and I think everyone on the plane did the same after the plane was almost sideways trying to land at Gatwick.
