People from Portsmouth are known as "skates", but only to the inhabitants of neighbouring Southampton. It is said that in the olden days, the Pompey sailors used to nail a flatfish, namely a skate, to the mast of their ship and then fornicate with the two underflaps as out at sea it was the only thing that resembled a vaginal passage.
