Do Germany now keep the trophy as it is their third win with the "newer" trophy?

As of 2014, 11 winners have been engraved on the base. It is not known whether FIFA will retire the trophy after they run out of space at the bottom; as recent images of the trophy show, there is space left for only three more engravings at the most, which means that should occur in 2030, when the tournament will celebrate its 100th anniversary. FIFA's regulations now state that the trophy, unlike its predecessor, cannot be won outright: the winners of the tournament receive a replica which is gold plated rather than solid gold

Winners

Jules Rimet Trophy

Uruguay – 1930, 1950
Italy – 1934, 1938
West Germany – 1954
Brazil – 1958, 1962, 1970
England – 1966

FIFA World Cup Trophy

Germany – 1974, 1990, 2014
Argentina – 1978, 1986
Italy – 1982, 2006
Brazil – 1994, 2002
France – 1998
Spain – 2010

The point being made by some is that West Germany won the 74 and 90 world cups and the unified Germany won it this year.

Yep and it looks like the records state that Germany FR have won it 3 times and Germany once. Nonetheless, they do not get to keep the trophy. And probably received a replica after 1990? (their 3rd win). Or will receive a replica after this win (3 wins with new trophy) or won't receive a replica until after 2 more wins (3 wins as Germany not Germany FR).

It's their second win. 1990 and 2014!
1990 was West Germany, so this is their first win.
As the old West Germany is now part of the new Germany it should not matter, 3rd win
I don't think it's right that what's now considered one country were able to enter two teams.

I stand corrected, the wall came down after the 1990 final (started before the world cup but not completed until after). Actual unification on 3rd Oct. Well spotted.
Sorry Drew,The wall came down AFTER 1990?...The wall came down....,October 1989,still have a bit of it here. but just being being a bit pedantic this time of the morning.

That imples that the actual trophy is solid gold. The way the players were throwing it around last night there is no way it is solid gold, unless they presented a replica.

Trophy is solid gold and weighs about 6 kgs. It is hollow though as if it was solid the whole way through it would be a lot heavier. Can't imagine they present a replica at the final...

They do for the ashes, so it's possible but you would hope unlikely.

I do find it a touch strange that East Germany actually played West Germany in the 1974 World Cup, and now have claim to 4 titles, 3 of which were won by a team (country) they played against.

Edit:

And West Germany won in 74, so how does that work then?

so what would have happened with a East vs West Germany final?
Exactly - you can't have it where a current team wins the final regardless of the result.

The Germans have won it 4 times. There is no disputing this.
The Europeans have won it 11 times, and we're European, so what do we get?
