I looked it up and calculated it. We see the number of free-kick goal you would expect given last seasons EPL numbers from all games. Not sure what the complaint is about.

Importantly, is it free-kick, freekick or free kick? I'm not sure we've standardised yet and it would be good to know what it is that's being blasted into the wall time and again.

By the way, we're probably worse on corners than we are on freekicks. I can't find stats from 2023/24, but we were the least effective team in the division in 2022/23. Potter promoted analyst Nick Stanley to become our first specialist set piece coach in February 2022. He remained in the role under RDZ, but our record in the area didn't improve. He left in the summer to join Norwich as a first team coach. I don't know how much time RDZ allowed him, but from just reading our set piece record during his time, you'd assume that this departure could be viewed as an opportunity rather than a threat. However, looking at our current list of staff: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/brighton-amp-hove-albion/mitarbeiter/verein/1237, we don't yet seem to have replaced him.

Without a specialist, I presume that the job currently falls to Hurzeler, Scheuermann and Crofts. It seems a perhaps surprising ommission from an organisation that is always about looking for every tiny advantage, but not all coaches have specialists. At St Pauli Hurzeler had one of his assistants on defensive and one on attacking set pieces. Hurzeler strikes me as being more open minded to bringing in a specialist than RDZ would have been. (Everybody, except perhaps Antonio Conte, does). Given the current vogue and Tony's attention to detail, I hope that we might be scouring lower leagues looking for the next Jover. Apparently the bloke at Aston Villa who looks like the bass player from a NWOBHM band is Austin MacPhee, a Scottish coach that they brought in from one of our regular hunting grounds, FC Midtjylland, who I read, have a reputation for being specialists in the area.

Worse is that three of those free kicks were by errors by the goalkeeper...

Gross against Everton - went through Pickfords hands pretty much, and wasn't in the corner
Dunk against Liverpool - Quick thinking yes, but Allison should never have let it happen
Welbeck against Forest - Wasn't in the corner and Sels should have got to it, but bad positioning and didn't move

Only Mac Allisters against Leicester was in the corner (and wasn't even his best "goal" in that game!)
I think you find that Welbeck went in the side netting , good free kick , keeper no chance

Yes McPhee is the most innovative, but Arsenal are quite something on set pieces -- on this, we didn't concede against them from one.
You're right on Huerzeler at St Pauli but note that he brought Knoop with him from there, whose title is goalkeeping coach (we already have one of those) but was also the defensive set piece coach at St Pauli. He is very present in the technical area when we are defending corners, free kicks, etc. He's not there when we have attacking ones.
I suspect we will bring in an attacking one, but FH, DW and TB have agreed to take their time over identifying the right one. What was clear from Sunday was that they are looking to bring in novelties on attacking set pieces -- Dunk and Hinshelwood on bounce duty clearly one of them.

We've been very solid defensively on set pieces for years now, repeatedly among the best in that category. I don't think that was the case before the arrival of Sanchez in goal and Stanley in the role. Since then that part of our game has been very good under Potter, De Zerbi and currently.

The stats from 23/24 (wherever I saw them a couple of days ago) said we were among the worst at scoring on set pieces so thats the same as 22/23.
I don't think the takers is the issue because Gross, Ali Mac, Trossard etc. are pretty decent footballers perfectly capable of taking corner kicks.

I'd say that the problem is that our few very tall players (Dunk, Webster, Van Hecke, Burn etc...) just aren't very good at scoring headers.

Would bet Webster and Van Hecke in between them got 100+ failed attempts from corners since the last time any of them scored in PL.

Scheuermann does attacking set pieces and Knoop does the defensive side.

I’d thought they were owned by Benham, which would have made this next to impossible, but apparently he sold up a year ago. I wonder if McPhee was a “data driven” hire by them?

And also it is literally a 'free' kick. So it can't be one word, or with a hyphen.

I would suggest that this is just natural evolution of language.

But I don't care about that really, what I care about is that this just reminded me that there's a whole section on the Wikipedia page on No-balls in cricket titled "Capitalisation convention and grammar"
