I wont sit on the fence, and I do agree Barnes does put in a shift. But his first touch is poor, his finishing is all to often very poor and when he does find himself in a great position he all too often bottles it and tries to put someone else in, who is in a worse position than himself...I know this fly's in the face of public opinion but I think this coming season, will be make or brake for him. I can't believe Poyet see's Barnes as a long term member of his first team. Time will tell.

His finishing is very poor? Absolute nonsense.

Here's some stats for you. season 2011/12 Barnes scored 20% of shots. Lambert (top scorer in the Championship) scored 30%.

If you consider the low number of shooting opportunities and that Barnes wasn't playing as an out and out striker I don't think his finishing is all that bad.

Opinions is what it's all about and everyone is entitled to theirs. My is if people think Barnes is a better option than Cms up front, then heaven help us.

I hope Barnes scores 30 this season and laughs in the haters' faces :)

Tell you what, believe it or not, but I hope Barnes scores 30 goals this season as well. I just don't think he will, no where near it. That doesn't make me a hater,(that's a very strong word) it makes me a man with an opinion that is different than yours.

Opinions are great but I think an understanding of the data provides great insight.

For example

CMS had a goals to shots ratio of 15%, for Barnes it was 20%. Last season Barnes started fewer games, didn't play as an out and out striker BUT managed the same amount of shots as CMS and scored more goals.

That indicates to me that he is a better finisher and (considering the position he plays) is more able to find opportunities to shoot than our first choice centre forward.

I have absolutely no doubt that Barnes is a better finisher than CMS on last season's viewing. More spectacular goals that require better ability to imo.

I'm not with you on that Icy.

We played in a way better for Barnes to score from the positions he took up.
CMS leading the line, alone, and 20 yards away from anyone else, means he was on a hiding to nothing.

Where as Barnes, usually no further forward than the penalty spot put him in a great position for the scraps.

Assuming we won't be playing 3 defensive midfielders and 1 winger, this year, we should see the CMS we spent the cash on.

With of course a confident goal scoring Barnes, to boot, happy days.

.

Any reason CMS wasn't there for the scraps too? He wasn't always 20 yards from the other players.

I always sound like I'm having a pop at CMS, I'm not I just feel that he is over rated and Barnes is under rated by our fans. I like them both

Barnes is definitely under rated.
We just didn't play to CMS' strengths.
He couldn't be there for the 'scraps' as he was the fella alone in the 6 yard box surrounded by thugs creating the 'scraps'.

Hmmm. hard to qualify the better scoring position idea....

I've been looking at the data on soccernet/espn, unfortunately it doesn't have a breakdown (or if it does I can't see it) of where each player scored from which would back up what you're saying.

Several of Barnes goal total for last season were not from open play i.e. penalties.

The CMS v Barnes stats would look significantly different if CMS took (and scored) our penalties.

Plus Barnes had a pen saved against Reading.
