I think the big moment was when Trippier took his and put it away so well. He has been our man of the tournament for me.
Agreed. Trippier has been excellent all tournament and you are right about that penalty - nicely taken, arguably under more pressure than anyone up to that point.I think the big moment was when Trippier took his and put it away so well. He has been our man of the tournament for me.
Not me. I thought the Colombian would hit the wood work with the very next spot kick, and that Trippier would haul us level. I also predicted Pickford would save the next one after that one-handed and that Dier would stroke home the winning penalty for England.
So you see, even once Henderson had his pen saved, I knew we'd be fine and I was proven correct as always. Hope this helps.
It made me angry even back then. Idiot pundits would 'explain' that there was no point as you couldn't re-create the pressure. ****ing idiots. When golfers try and knock in the winning put for the Ryder cup, there's a ton of pressure on them - does that mean they don't ****ing practice putting?
They develop ways of adding pressure to their training. And obviously that can be done with football too. And the practising should come at the end of a tiring training session (which thankfully it now does).
so did i.I knew Henderson wasn't going to score when he ball-juggled to the penalty spot, a sure sign of nerves... I was more surprised when the Colombian chap who came next clobbered the bar!
Yes
But I had already 'made peace' with us going out when they equalised ... I was actually a little bit annoyed at their chap for hitting the bar. "don't make me believe" ...
When they equalised and normal time was over I went to the bar at the place where I was watching and didn't see any of the extra time as I thought it would end up as the score 2 - 1 to Columbia.
Went back to the huge screens where at least 2000 people were watching and watch the penalty shoot out through my fingers.
The place erupted when we were through, the plastic drinking beakers and loads of other stuff was tossed into the air and the song Three Lions was heard everywhere.
Most England supporters were shaking the hands of Colombian supporters as they left, which was a nice touch.
Couldn't agree more. You need to be confident in pressure situations. You can get that confidence from knowing that you have practised lots of penalties and know what you are doing.
