Why when 1-0 up with 5 minutes left did we bring on a forward when there were two defenders and a midfielder still available on the bench...?

Why didn't Hughton even try to protect what we had and see the game out?

Izzy Brown came on and seemed much more interested in trying to score a second goal than in securing the clean sheet and three points. On 88 minutes Brown got involved in a forward move with Gross and Izquierdo that ended with him shooting from 20 yards with the bizarre added feature of holding midfielder Dale Stephens bombing on past at that moment with a lungbusting run into the penalty area...

At the resulting corner we then chose to deploy Stephens on the goal line to wrestle with Pickford while central DEFENDERS Dunk and Hunemeier also attacked the 6 yard box... to allow an Everton breakaway at that stage of the game with so many of Brighton's primarily defensive players completely out of position was unforgiveable and we could have been punished even further.

Hughton may have got away with this sort of naivety in the Championship but Premier League teams will always pick us off if he continues with these sort of tactics.

I agree we left ourselves exposed yesterday but to suggest Hughton 'got away with this sort of naivety in the Championship' is bizarre. In fact he was regularly criticised by some on here for sitting back too much on a lead and making defensive subs (occasionally leading to us conceding too).

Yes, an alternative sub may have been better but Brown almost scored and it was a moment of madness from one of our most experienced players that effectively cost us in the end.

Silly old bat
Only last week, people were moaning about Hughton being too defensive, and bringing on defensive midfielders instead of going for it.

we were great in that period weren't we - it was an absolute joy to watch Everton's players out on their feet as we attacked at will. And when they did break it was Knockaert busting a gut to get back.

and then Bruno fecks up from the free kick :(

Plenty of times we've done the opposite, gone ultra defensive, and conceded because we were sat too deep (even in the championship).

Bournemouth most recently. Bolton, Preston etc. etc. all in the Championship.

If Hughton had done as you said and used a defensive sub and we still conceded, you would moan that Hughton is too negative and only wants to protect 1-0 wins

Leave the tactics to the man who got us to the Premier League.

His big mistake was keeping the ineffective Murray on for far too long. As soon as Brown and IzzyIzzybonhairdo came on, we immediately looked more dynamic. There was pace and movement and Everton were uncomfortable and we looked capable of going 2 up. We won't kill teams off by sitting back deep.
Bringing on more defensive cover still wouldn't have stopped Bruno's moment of insanity.

Game of opinions though, isn't it?

Some near me thought it was a mistake to take Murray off due to his set-piece defending. And they said that before the free-kick which led to the penalty.

wasn't at the game but the goal you conceded came from an uncharacteristic error from Bruno, not sure you can blame Hughton for that?

If you're aiming for a wind-up post, you need to make a LITTLE bit more obvious.

If you're being serious, what Thunder Bolt said.

I had no objection or qualms about bringing on Izzy Brown as it bolstered our midfield and he nearly scored which would have sealed the 3 points. We came unstuck due to Bruno rush of blood to the head in retaliation to what he considered was a foul on him no manager can account for that so no criticism of CH from me.,

You're a Burnley fan? You can at least be excused from being whooshed while many of our fans have taken the bait.

It's a parody post contrasting the popular opinion amongst many of our fans that we sit too deep when we take the lead and don't 'kill a game off'. In reality, the opposition game plan changes and they take more risks going forward.

If Brown had scored his chance and made it 2-0 we'd have won.

It was a good tactic and nearly worked, much better than turgid defending for ages.
Pity that the captain didn't read the script.

for me he did not get it wrong at the end he got it wrong from the start.poor side out of form we should have attacked them from the start, imagine if we had scored an early goal what could have been.
