Has anyone heard that shit by Ronan Keating which is a cover of the classic Pogues and the late Kirsty McColl's classic Fairytale of New York. What gives that C**t the right to think he is even good enough to sing along to it in the bath, yet alone re-record it. It's a pile of shit and NOBODY should buy it. I turned the radio off in disgust.

I dislike the original version so any cover would be rubbish in my book.

Covering it badly and claiming its good is sacralidged

Dustin did a cover once, but it was marketed as a parody version.
Dustin The Turkey-now you're talking! Shame that Dervla Kirwan's vocals are no match for Kirsty's though. Have you heard the version of Rat Trap that he recorded with Sir Bob a few years back? "Yer don't write 'em like this any more, Bob. In fact, yer new stuff's brutal!" Has me in stiches every time :lolol:

Is a shocking cover :nono:

Got that "Best Christmas songs in the world" album thing, and it is on there.

Ronan just cannot match the original vocals

Disgracefully ruined one of the all-time great Christmas songs. Mrs Brovian bought the 'Greatest Christmas Songs' ever double CD because it had FTONY on it - only to discover it's that gutless cover.

What with that and the Band Aid remake it's been a very bad year for murdering classic songs :nono: :nono:

There are some songs that some artists just shouldn't cover and Fairytale of New York is one of them. Mercifully I have yet to hear it.

There are some very rare exceptions to this where the cover is almost as good as the original and The Divine Comdeys's version of The Smiths 'There is a light that never goes out' and Frankie Goes to Hollywoods version of 'Born to run are two thiat always immediately spring to mind.

Ronan - what were you thinking ? Never in your wildest dreams could you hope to have come anywhere near producing something remotely as good as this song.

SawThe Pogues on Tuesday Night - this song almost bought a tear to the eye it is that good.

That applies to EVERY song he covers. Does he record anything original.

Can't stand the twat or his 'music'

Agree, cover versions are fine as long as it introduces something new to the song they are covering. Keating and that spawn of Satan known as Westlife just take a song a remove anything daring from it. I had the misfortune to hear Keating's version of FTONY in HMV and it is gruesome beyond any standard. As Berty G has rightly pointed out he doesn't actually have the vocal dexterity to sing the song.

The Lemonheads' version of Different Drum (originally written by Mike Nesmith and recorded by Linda Ronstadt of all people) is arguably the most perfect "3 minute pop single" of all time, and thus must rate among the best cover versions ever.
