Development at Falmer

Am I right in thinking that the Falmer site is earmarked for development anyway? Let's just say for arguement's sake that the stadium is not allowed and the Albion find some alternative. Do you think that another developer wanting for instance to build a science park or out of town retail park would have to go through the same process that we have? I doubt it. Yet, what the Falmer NIMBYs don't seem to realise is, it's just a matter of time before something is built there. There are just not enough development sites in Brighton and Hove to let this one go begging.

If I lived in Falmer I would rather have a football stadium on my doorstep than a retail park. At least it would only be used periodically and hardly at all during the summer. Try getting away from a retail park that is open 7 days a week for at least 12 hours a day.

It amazed me to see that the health and racquet club opposed the development, appearing as it did a few years ago as an attractive grey cowshed-come-aircraft hangar.

"Goodness Tarquin, football. Common people like that game. We can't possibly allow that sort of thing round here"

I believe at one time in the past the Falmer site was suggested as a possible location for an industrial waste incinerator to burn all our city's rubbish.

quite right. As Brighton University WILL leave the site sooner or later, the site will become designated as brown field and will be the first port of call for every developer that comes to town. It'd be just PERFECT for an incinerator being right next to a main road.

personally I'd be happy to see a retail park there! Just ask the people of Hove weather it was better to have a football ground which meant traffic for 2 hours every other week for 9 months. OR a retail park that has traffic 24hrs a day including huge delivery lorries 7 days a week!

I'd rather live next door to Selhurst than next door to a retail park!

Aren't there now restrictions on out-of-town retail developments? Can't see one at Falmer getting the go-ahead.

Guess it has to the incinerator..

Hmmm. I sense an angle here. We've enough journalists/Media people on here so this is what we should do: Start putting stories into the media that Brighton Council are thinking that if the Stadium does get turned down then Falmer is the ideal place for the waste incinerator. The club could then ride to the rescue and say rather than have a waste incinerator with lorries arriving 24/7 just drop your opposition to the stadium. In return we promise not to use the stadium all the time, say only every other Saturday and not at all during the summer.

A permanent pikey site or an immigrant detention camp would upset them a bit :D

Ideal site for a massive wind farm, right on the top of the hill.
Although recent reports seem to be against the expansion of them!

I believe the site has been earmarked for housing and not a retail site. I've heard rumours that if the Albion don't get the stadium, the site is likely to be developed for low cost housing.

A sort of Moulescombe extension if you will.

I think that I might have the perfect solution, let them build a sodding great retail site at Falmer, relocate all the shops built on the site of the Goldstone there, thus freeing up a nice site to build a brand spanking new footy ground, hey presto we are back where we started and never wanted to leave in the first place...

I think it will be a while since they just opened a new medical school building there about a year ago.
