That's one of the great myths of football. Allardyce's Bolton had the likes of Djorkaeff, Okacha, Campo, N'Gotty, Hierro and Stelios in it - those aren't hoofball players. The West Ham team that beat us 6-0 in our first season in the Championship had the likes of Vaz Te and Maynard in it, again not big, hefty strikers. Pragmatic is probably the word for Allardyce

Spend £15m on players, give them 4 year contracts, and it's only a £3.75m cost in the P&L, far below the £13m loss allowed this season.

They have to be up above £20m total brought in surely? These two are £10m plus plus all their other signings, (Weinmann, McCarthy, Bent, Ince etc?) plus wages, signing on fees etc even if they amortise those, surely they cannot stay under that limit?

In their last published accounts they broke even and had a wage bill of £16.4 million compared to the Albion losing £10.6 million and having a wage bill of £20.3 million. So they do have scope to increase their losses to a far greater extent than we do.

Even so that's a hell of a leap Pres? Bradley Johnson has come down from the PL for a £6m fee, he has to be on more money than he was on at Norwich surely?

At a guess £25k a week? Tom Ince came with a long contract remaining at Hull, again has to be in the £20k a week bracket surely? Bent? OK he wasn't going to get £70k a week again but a free agent around that £20k figure again? I know they are all guesses but that's £3m+ a season without bonuses etc from just three players?

Going to be a tough ask I would think.

Everyone will want to beat you, you're already nine points off the pace and some of your signings simply aren't all that in my view. That said, I've stated before that of all the fans in this league who deserve to see their team seemingly splash out, Derby fans are up there. You stuck with your team for half a decade of dross bumbling along in 14th/15th place in this division before your home grown policy finally took hold. I'm just not convinced you've bought all that well.

I think allot of our fans are finding the change of approach (i.e spending serious money on players) a little difficult to adjust to. We're too used to things going tits up even when it all looks plain sailing for the majority to ever get too cocky or confident (despite any outward signs to the contrary), so many are half-expecting the new signings to be underwhelming. That said, they both won their clubs' player of the season awards last year and both sets of fans appear disappointed to be losing them, so provided they can match their form of last season we shouldn't have too many complaints. The 'big spending' tag CAN be an extra incentive for opposition teams (we witnessed it during our last major spending spree way back in 1992-1994) but I'm hopeful that now we have a more mature squad, they'll have the character to overcome this factor.

Someone else wondered whether Clement would be gone if results haven't picked up by the next International break? That's something I've pondered myself : the Chairman, Mel Morris, has just completed a full take-over of the club from the North American consortium he has partnered with since the play-off final last year, so he now has a free hand and doesn't have to justify his decisions to anyone else. My gut feel is that he was instrumental in appointing Clement and will give him time to get it right, though we all know how fan pressure can influence even the most single-minded of owners.

Anyhow, it's an exciting new era : we're now owned once again by a local man and life-long fan (much as yourselves I think) which is what many of our fans hoped for in the long term. We know this doesn't always end well, but he's an astute businessman and he does have some previous experience as a Director of the club as part of the local ownership consortium between 2006 and 2007 before the 'yanks' initially took over. I'm fairly confident that he and CEO Sam Rush have a thorough understanding of the FFP rules and the take-over has been timed to make full use of the revised regulations. As Brighton fans, you'll fully understand that feeling of being able to perhaps look forward to achieving your potential as a club after years of financial constraint.

Finally, I'm not too surprised you've made a good start : I noted you'd made some decent signings and Hughton knows how to get promoted so I was expecting a much stronger Brighton team this season. Given that the other main contenders for promotion (other than Ipswich) are on my list of teams to dislike, I'd be delighted if this season's game at the Amex turns out to be a title-decider.

Good post, having a local man and life long fan in charge does bring a certain amount of extra security to things. Derby have far too many quality players in my opinion not to be well in the mix for promtion come May.

He also managed to attract some good loan signings (Wisdom, Bamford, Ibe) that we probably wouldn't have got under Clough. Ironically, it was McClaren's adherence to his preferred system that helped to derail us after we lost all of the players that were fundamental to that system (Martin, Thorne, Eustace and Mascarell). Subsequently, when he tried to change the system, it didn't work. I think one of the reasons we've had a poor start is because Clement has employed a number of different systems, both in trying to make us less predictable and in coping with the early season injuries. Hopefully, he'll now settle on perhaps two main alternative sytstems, because I don't think footballers are clever enough to learn more than that!

You did look good that season - particularly against us in the play-offs. I just wish we had Chris Martin. And the stadium was properly jumping at your place.
