Gary Neville is correct in many of the things he says, and it's most welcome to hear people in his position speak out. I was interested to hear him back the idea of real-time monitoring of club finances. A Dullard will confirm that a former Albion chairman has been proposing a scheme of this sort for many months now.
But Neville's remarks that football clubs should not be treated like normal businesses is misguided under the present football structure. Isn't it precisely because clubs are regarded as special cases - by fans blinded by their support and loyalty - that they get away with running up huge debts in the community (see #twats and the club that was replaced by CPFC2010) before going bust? Clubs in the Championship overspend at insane levels in pursuit of promotion to the Premier League, effectively ignoring the FFP rules designed to protect them, in the knowledge that they can easily pay the fines if they are successful (see Plucky and fairytale Premier League champions Leicester) that most sensible businesses would never remotely consider.
Indeed, successful business people who buy football clubs then seem to abandon any of the principles that brought them success elsewhere as the football madness takes hold. When someone such as Alan Sugar at Tottenham tried to apply sound business principles, he was vilified by the fans for not spending enough..
If the football structures in this country can be realigned, with the cliff edge between Premier League and EFL somehow smoothed out (which will take an act of self-harm in the wider interests of the game on the part of the richest clubs, so unlikely), then we might get somewhere. More central influence over the clubs, as in American models such as the NFL, would help.
No doubt many people would like most of former sports minister Tracey Crouch's recommendations implemented but government influence is something to be a little wary of. Fifa is touchy about political interference in the game and once threatened to suspend Poland from all world football when the central government took an interest in corruption in the PZPN (Polish FA).

Can’t argue with Neville’s point about some sort of protection around the ownership of clubs are a piece of English culture and heritage.
However it’s easy to rant at overspending owners but let’s remind ourselves what that money is being spent on and it’s player wages and transfers that have spiralled out of control. Interesting that he does not mention this perhaps as his and Carraghers own pockets have been well lined in that regard.
If you really want to protect football clubs and make them sustainable then cap wages and transfer fees. It would need a FIFA level intervention for this to work as otherwise players would just chase the money in another league which is why it will never happen.
In the meantime we will continue to see clubs with rich history go to the wall

Was good fun if you ask me. The Forest keeper proper shit housing it and winding up the Derby players, Ravel Morrison losing his head yet again. Few ex Brighton connections on both sides.

Yes, it was a challenge by Cook that gave away the penalty. The punchups were hilarious.
basic fact is they carried on over spending due to sale of stadium proceeds
then club goes into administration and owner keeps stadium
is wrong to allow the two to be separated in order to meet FFP
see Villa, Birmingham, Shef Wed - Villa just about got away with it though only due to beating Derby
