It's a bastard. my wife and son suffer from it occasionally, my daughter and I just can't comprehend why "pull yourself together doesn't work" as neither of us suffer from it. It's a winter thing in our family though. Feel for you Frutos but don't really have advice, not convinced drugs are the solution though.

Depends on how bad it is. If it is bad, then GP, specialist help and medication is required certainly. The earlier the better. SSRIs are pretty effective at targeting now and no side effects.

If it is not so bad, cut out the alcohol and stay active.

Without wanting to sound too 'hippy' - finding a meaning to your life, a major life goal, something you want to aim towards/achieve. Failing that lots of early morning sea swimming at Tidemills to stimulate body and mind.

:)

I haven't drunk alcohol in about 9 years. GPs and medication are simply not an option, I refuse to pollute my body with drugs.

Thank you all for your advice. :)

Can't understand why people are so against drugs/tablets to help the situation. Well known fact that medical imbalances in the brain can cause depression and no amount of counselling or exercise can resolve those imbalances. I've been suffering on and off with depression for over 15 years, and drugs, along with all the other things, counselling, exercise etc makes it easier to live with. Depression needs to be understood, not ridiculed. And ignoring medication IMHO is ridiculing depression.

Having suffered with depression since 1993, I can tell you that the answer IS NOT alcohol, drugs or locking yourself away.
What worked for me was something that's been mentioned already - exercise. It's a brilliant, natural way to lift your spirits. I had a nervous breakdown in 93 and to cut a very long story short, I joined a gym and after a matter of weeks I started to look better and feel fitter, plus I even had a few nice comments from women in the street. Let me tell you, when a complete unknown comes up to you and says how good you look, the dark clouds disappear for a while ...:)

Fair enough, but not all depression is the same and for some people drugs are seen as masking, rather than dealing with the causes.

keep off the Librium, it does work I had some when I was splitting with my first wife but after a week I could'nt remember I even had a wife.
having watched many of my friends and work companions suffer with this and this is only my personal opinion you can only get rid of it by meeting whatever it is causing it head on.
it hurts for a while but it does solve the problem and you might need some help from a good trusted friend.
I would never wish this on anyone so good luck

Definitely exercise. Medical studies show it's as effective as drugs. Plus it keeps you fit.

Its because tablets are the awnser to everything in this country, and from what i,ve seen most people get a lot worse dropping all these tablets.

Stay off the tablets:)

Having said the above, I still suffer 'down' periods, but as I know there IS light at the end of the tunnel and that depression CAN be managed, I've never quite fallen into the deep despair of the early days. Sadly, it never goes away entirely and now, I've learned to cope with it.

Pay to visit a good NLP practitioner, if its not chemical imbalance, its the quickest and easiest way to change the negative patterns we can all sometimes have.:)

I think it's good to notice it is there for starters. You can go for ages being a moody fucker before realising that you are driven by a hopelessness sort of programmed into you by experience or genetically and so on. After that, try your hardest not to keep staring at it or have it staring at you. You can get trapped in the observation of it after it nestles. Exercise is very good. In some of the deeper spells of it i had a few years ago during a vigourous run the world completely opened to me even just for moments. It was bright and tearfully wonderful and if my legs weren't giving way then i'd have stayed in that fantasy world forever.

best of luck.
