Having just returned from the dentist after a filling that seemed to take forever I am curious as to why the numbness needs to go on for so long. Is it just for laughs so they can watch you spill drink all down the side of your face for the rest of the day, or are they being over cautious to avoid inflicting pain?

Also why talk to you when you clearly can't reply? Why say open wider when your mouth is already more open than an alligator? And finally what the hell is that instrument they attach to you and leave there for ages. Is that just for laughs again?!

Anyone got any good or insider dentist stories that might shed some light on their seedy world?

Growing up my dentist was known as The Butcher of Brighton. He didn't bother with anaesthesia. Straightforward knee on your chest and job done.........

Yeah, that one.
I think you've got to be a touch medieval to want to be a dentist.

I'd be interested to know what some of the things they stick in your mouth are too. It all sounds so bloody loud and industrial as it's going on inside your head but, considering how small that space is they must be very wee and dainty.

Had a wisdom tooth out a few months back. That was some impressive numbness.

Had a wisdom tooth that simply didn't want to be extracted. It wasn't crooked, just good and strong. The dentist spent about half an hour trying to get it out. He even broke it into pieces. You know you're in trouble when they call in the senior dentist :( I had a bruised face for DAYS.

I came across a dentist whilst in the RAF in Germany in the 1950s whose attitude to fillings was "I don't use anaesthetics. If you don't move, it won't hurt" If you winced or jumped, he said "You moved". He was the Senior Dental Officer for 2nd TAF, the RAF based in Germany, so he presumably had some good qualifications.

I was a letting agent when I was younger (this was before I discovered what a soul was) and one of our tenants was a dentist. I went round to do the 6 monthly property check and he had coffee table books full of dentistry tools. He let me flick through them and they were designer tools, some of them diamond encrusted. It was so weird.

So glad to see a Dentist thread, I have root canal treatment on the 16th! Eeeekkkk! Saying that after being on antibiotics for 5 days as had an abscess I cant wait to hopefully get rid of the problem! I hate teeth and dentists (please disregard that comment if you are a dentist and doing my stuff next week - you are OK!)

6 is the magic number - magic number of feet away from your toilet you should store your toothbrush in order to avoid airborne particles from toilet flushing making their way to your bristles

Had a root canal on bottom front tooth that didn't work first time, paid for a specialist to do it second time, he snapped the drill off in said tooth and spent half hour trying to yank it out with a pair of pliers, thought he was trying to kill me! Anyway didn't work in the end and the tooth came out fml

I've got two teeth coming out on the 18th. It was that or two potentially unsuccessful, and expensive, root canals. I made the quip "just take the teeth, I'm not that attached to them" and the dentist just rolled his eyes.

Thought it was pretty funny myself.

I seem to remember they were a bit more advanced in the 1990's whilst at Bruggen.
Using the door and string method :)

Couldn't you have just posted them to him?

Had a tooth lodged in my jaw bone which needed to come out. All booked in for 3:30pm on a Friday. Got to about 4:30 without much movement and dentist clearly started panicking - assume he had a table at 5 with the wife.

It was basically one shot of anaesthetic through the nose, one almighty wrench, one almighty scream, another shot through the nose etc.

He finally gave up about 5:30, left me with half the top of my gum loosely stitched together and flapping about for the weekend. General anaesthetic first thing Monday morning but that was a long weekend.

Had some work done on one of those back teeth about 10 years ago, and I felt like I was in a movie being tortured. I eventually had to get the work done privately by someone who'd passed his exams. With hindsight, it became clear that the young person who tried the first time didn't have a clue what he was doing, and was injecting the anesthetic in the wrong place.

Had to have an apicoectomy when a root canal didn't work. Even with anaesthesia it was the most bloody painful thing I've ever experienced - I swear this guy worked for CIA Black Ops

Had my wisdom teeth taken out at Guys hospital where student dentists "have a go", someone is standing by telling them where to stand and how to pull etc But as they are new they are VERY gentle still went home on the train to HH, bleeding holding a bunch of tissues to my bloody face, carriage seemed remarkably clear though

One dentist in Wimbledon I went to in 1991 put a cap on top of an abscess.

Agony is not the word. The dentist I went to in Brighton to sort it days later could not believe
they'd f***& up so much.
