A good man with his heart in the right place, like most Labour folk.

He was talking about David Owen. He said 'David Owen is a very talented, ambitious and successful man ……………….. it's a shame he's such a SH.T,'

Lived in Alfriston for many years. Kept Mike Yarwood in business for many years too.

Arguably a disastrous Chancellor of the Exchequer though, he had to get off a flight to some conference or other because the IMF inspectors came calling.

But I liked him personally, he was a character, not a bland TV product. With a good turn of phrase; he described being interrogated in Parliament by Geoffrey Howe as "like being savaged by a dead sheep"

A good man and full of wit. I first met him when I was two years old - he was a friend of my dad in Leeds - and I got to bump into him a few times once he had moved to Sussex. The Healeys live forever - his mother was over 100 when she died. A man not afraid to threaten the undeserving rich, he promised to squeeze property speculators until the pips squeaked.

An interesting character with a hinterland unlike so many current bland politicians.

A Champagne Socialist but a great man and I believe he was Lord of the Manner in Alfriston.

He was a beer drinker. And I can't imagine any of the Lords Gage, who have been Lords of the Manor of Alfriston for generations, giving up that title to a Labour politician like Denis Healey.
