Dennis Bergkamp to Manage Swansea?

On twitter earlier:
Dennis Bergkamp wasn't in the betting for the Swansea job yesterday - he is now one of the favourites at 6/1. We'll keep you updated on #SSN

A few papers and websites are reporting this as well. He has been the Ajax assistant for a while, if it is true then it would be interesting. ???

Assistant manager at Ajax for a year, is the sum total of his managerial experience? I'd say that was a big risk even for a middling Championship team let alone a team like Swansea who have just had a great 1st season in the Premier League. Be very surprised if this happened

sky bet stopped taking bets on this when bergkamp came in to 4/6 on, must have had a positive interview at the very least, rather than just rumour

Cannot see them appointing him as he has no experience whatsoever as a No 1 and they have too much to lose if he fails. Had he been a No 2 in the Premier Div as per Graeme Jones perhaps but not from the Dutch League.

He is on record as saying that he is happy coaching and as an assistant but doesn't want to be manager - much like Tanno. From the interviews I've seen on Dutch TV that has always come across as being entirely genuine and on that basis I really can't see him coming to Swansea. I have a feeling this is a bit of sleight of hand to take eyes away from the main action which I've heard is still with Graeme Jones and discussions with Whelan at Wigan which are supposedly ongoing.

Take no notice of bookies - this is a small market where they always react to the slightest movement. If someone puts more than a tenner on then the odds will jump all over the place

dOn first reading I thought it seems a bit unlikely but thinking on - Bergkamp gets to step up from Ajax's academy (probably not a bad thing to have on your initial managerial CV). People forget that Ajax had a reasonable run in this years Champs Lge on a fraction of the budget of many rivals, including an impressive win at Old Trafford. On the other hand there have been a lot of internal problems at Ajax, with Cryuff interfering a lot in the Boardroom, so may not be a bed of roses.

So maybe DB gets to cut his teeth managing a Prem side with a team that already plays decent style of footie so would appeal to both him and Swansea. It's whether he wants to pitch up in South Wales, when other offers might come in if other Clubs know he is available. I guess Bergkamp has a lot of kudos for his playing style, but has to show he can do a proper managers job.

Looking at the bigger picture if he does ok for a year or two at Swansea could it be a stepping stone back to Ajax or maybe even to succeeding Wenger at Arsenal? I guess that might appeal to a lot of Gooners.

Ex top players like Bergkamp and Poyet have to start somewhere.

So some of you see a guy who used to be a great player but with no managerial experience being employed by a Premier League team and are already talking about him making the leap to him succeeding Wenger? This really is the silly season in full flow.

I'd expect them to make a move for Poyet before they'd even consider Bergkamp tbh

Wow, thats come out of nowhere really. Not a bad call

That is complete nonsense. A truly great player with no managerial experience = Failure in waiting

Gus is just the type of manager they are likely to go for. Hope they don't of course.

...Gus Poyet when he took the Brighton job.

when they were in the bottom half in the 3rd tier and he'd had experience with two clubs at that level as assistant and was highly rated. Taking on Bergkamp would be the biggest risk that any Premier League club has ever taken wouldn't it? I mean he has pretty well no experience in management.

But, been learning his trade at Ajax, not a bad shout in my opinion. Got to get started somewhere

You have indeed got to start somewhere but do you think they would be considering him if he was not the great Dennis Bergkamp? No chance. Why not John Gorman?
