have you tried ringing round the landscape gardening firms they sometimes have to pay fortunes for soil.

Where are you based? I am looking to buy a hippo bag of top soil curently!

I don't want to butt in on the OP, but I've got a load of top soil that I need to get rid of, and I'm very near Portslade station. We've used it as a veg planter over the last few years adding compost each spring. Great for beds and planting and stuff, but not a substitute for laying turfs / lawn.

You can't fill hippo bags up to the brim with soil. I bought the big bag and I think it was half way, maybe less. I went with sussexwaste.com in southwick at (I think ) £49 a cubic metre bag.

Or get a grab lorry to collect. They just scoop it up and go

With the hippo bags I saw there is a large one which can hold 1.5 tonnes, but then there is also a MASSIVE one, but that also can only hold 1.5 tonnes as thats more designed for big but light items. Did you get told to only fill half way up?

If I got just the big one, I assume I could fill it right to the top.

My main issue is my garden is at the back so I will have to wheel all the soil down a side alley before dumping it in bags at the front.

Dear NSC,

I've got a little question regarding SOIL.

I've got loads of the bloody stuff. I mean LOADS. I'VE levelled out my garden and have to get rid of all this excess soil. It's far too much really to post on gumtree as free soil and it's full of rubble etc. I basically want rid.

At the moment I'm aiming towards buying a 'hippo bag' for £99 quid or so. You fill it up and they take it. It's an alternative to a skip as I can't really do a skip where my house is.

Has anyone ever found a cheaper alternative to these Hippo bags? I reckon I need 2 at least which would get rid of 3 tonnes of soil for about £200. I can't take it myself due it's mass and restrictions in place.

THANKS!

Send it Blackpool FC their pitch could do with some quality southern soil

In their terms and conditions on the website it lists:

The 1 cubic yard MIDIBAG
The 1.5 cubic yard MEGABAG
or the 4.5 cubic yard HIPPOSKIP

3. Filling the bag

Distribute your waste and its weight evenly and do not overload or fill the bag above the top edge. Maximum 1 tonne for a Midibag and 1.5 tonnes for a Megabag. If the bag is overfilled, you will be charged extra.

As a guide:

Heavy soil = 2/3 per bag
Rubble = 3/4 per bag
Builders’ waste = level bag

Due to it’s large size, the Hipposkip bag can only be filled up to 1/4 full with heavy waste such as bricks and masonry. The Hipposkip bag is intended for the disposal of large amounts of light, bulky waste such as kitchen units, and care should be taken not to overload the bag. If you are in any doubt, please contact us before purchase!
