Which players came forward and discredited Wilkins ? What did they say ?

Nice to hear from you again, I am guessing you missed me.

I think you know who they were and yes what they said was an effort to discredit him and it was with some prompting from the club.

Even today people will question his man-manmagement skills, whatever that means.

Fergie is ruthless but Wilkins was just lacking the man-mangement skills and upset some players that he didnt want to play in his team, who cares what the players thought, especially those that choose to speak out.

I think it is even more pertinent when the club and the press didn't bother finding disgruntled players during Adams regime, no need to smear a failing manager that most expected to be sacked anyway, so why do it to a 20 year servant that had achieved so much for the club, not only in his management role but other roles too.

Publicly, I can think of two, one of whom hardly pulled up any trees - Paul Reid and the McFaul (Shane?) chap. If I recall right, both criticised Wilkins in the way the Fraser criticised Dick Knight.

I've heard directly three more, one of whom is still playing for the Albion. I have also heard of two more still - both still at the club, and who arrived during Wilkins' reign - who weren't impressed with his methods.

However, to what extent they represent the rest of the playing staff is, of course, another matter.

Were these players who were regularly in the starting line up?

What do you mean by 'with some prompting by the club'. Were they offered money, new contracts etc if they were critical of Wilkins? If so, who exactly in the club was making the 'prompting'?

Ahh yes, vaguely recall it now. I think I shrugged it off at the time (in Reids case) as a rather unnecessary parting shot from a bitter departed player. McFauls remarks were worthless, being as he played about 3 minutes for us, and in one of those he managed to let a straigthtforward pass roll between his legs and out for a throw. Who cares what he thought of the manager ?

Always a pleasure to make your acquaintence BG, never a chore.

I think we can all agree that Wilkins's treatment by the club was pretty shabby, I've never claimed otherwise. But thats football, these things happen, water under the bridge, we've all moved on now etc etc. The subject has been done to death and there's really nothing new to be said about it.

Onwards and upwards, as a certain radio host used to say.

Wasn't it Paul Reid who started the ball rolling in the Argus.

Very good personaly friend of DK, apparantly.

Andy Naylor had already lost patience with Wilkins, he wouldn't allow a stream of quotes from many of his players especially the young ones and this had upset Naylor.

Naylor a staunch Adams supporter wasted no time in contacting likely dissenting players and DK was quite happy with that, it helped ease his decision on his adoring public by firstly by bringing back Adams then by offering good reason to sack a manager who had just finished 7th.

Ultimately football sorts itself out and you tend to get what you deserve and we nearly did.

Hmmm...still in that habit of presenting your theories, suppositions and assumptions as though they were FACT though, I see.

Also it happens at other clubs, Coppel at man city for example. Its a reflection on the board not the manager especially when theres a history of it.

Coppell resigned after 33 days, it is well known in Manchester why he resigned, and it was nothing to do with the club or football.

Oh yes it is .........

The problem I have BG is that you have extrapolated a couple of articles from players who were not offered contracts by Wilkins into a 'whispering' campaign initiated by someone at the club, and when pressed, you ignore direct questions.

If you are correct, I will happily hold my hands up, and buy you a drink or twn, but to date you have presented a half baked and vague conspiracy theory brought about by 'them' , 'it', 'the club' etc, and without any clear evidence or articulation to back it up.

Paul Reid had a pop at Wilkins after not being offered a contract, as did Shane McFaul, Gary Hart and others in the Argus. You claimed this was due to them being set up by the club who had just released them which seems a bit crazy to me.

Really ... unless you can back this up with documentation from a credited source then its opinion or hearsay, it is certainly NOT fact.

He will keep spouting crap until you unequivocally prove him to be talking out his arse

.... hang about a minute

Your kiddin me, you will not say which players offered you the inaccuracies whilst demanding to know how I am aware that they were telling you 'their newest best friend' a pack of lies.

However this is one over time can be substantiated without me having to publicly divulge my source.

I say again that Wilkins was NOT absent from the club for 3 consecutive weeks and you TLO and those players that fed you this snippet are talking total bollocks.

BigGully,

Have a read of this and then tell Guy he's a liar

http://www.northstandchat.biz/showthread.php?t=123817&highlight=training&page=8

I would do it for you, but he's a bit bigger than me

I guess the equivalent for this thread would be to get Tony Bloom to knock on BG's door and reassure him that he agreed to underwrite the stadium all along and that Dick didn't intimidate him into voting Dean out. (I personally suspect that there may have been pressure the other way now that we know who was in charge !)

ONE of Guy Butters (former player of the year, captain of the club, who played nearly 200 games for the Albion and so popular with fans that they organised a celebration when he stopped playing league football) and BigGully is a LIAR.

Surely a POLL is required.
