Dean Hammond

How much longer can this guy genuinely be a starter for the Albion(let alone captain). I thought he was pretty awful yesterday. He looks nervous on the ball, his passing is so limited. We had a free-kick yesterday that he could of taken quickly but he just stood there looking like he didn't know what to do . His only telling contribution was to get booked, thus taking him one card nearer to a 1 game ban.
I think his passing to a blue shirt percentage must be about 95, but anyone can stand in the centre circle waiting for the ball, only to pass it straight back to the guy he got it from, or backwards. Hopefully once Reid has a few more games under his belt and Fraser gets over his illness these 2 can forge a decent partnerhip and Hammond can get some of what he had last season back, with some enforced time on the bench..

He was not great yesterday and not been brilliant all season. Thing is though he's chipped in with a few goals which is invaluable.
Who else would you play ? Fraser and Reid perhaps. After seeing Loft yesterday he certainly isnt better than any of them

Haven't most of his goals been from the penalty spot, ok they all count but a professional footballer should not be missing the target from 12 yards(I know even some of the best do, but they shouldn't).

Sorry Titanic, do you think he has played well this season? I'll accept that i'm not in the hallowed Season Ticket club, but i've seen a fair few games this season and i've yet to see him put in a captains performance.

I thought he was poor towards the end of last season and it transpired he was playing with a hernia problem. I hoped after the hernia op things would improve, but i'm sorry to say nothing changed.

More nonsense. Watch the tape of the Orient game back, then come back.

It will remind you just how good he is.

What an absolute joke this thread is. What do people expect Dean Hammond to do? He's never been a great passer but doesn't loose the ball too often, tracks back, has a superb work rate, wins headers in midfield and in both penalty boxes. His contract is up at the end of the season and if he walks where will that leave us in the centre of midfield? Reid is good in there but needs a player like Hammond in alongside him. Dean Hammond needs his contract sorted ASAP, should have been done in the summer imo.

The worse news is he limped off badly yesterday so may not be available Saturday.

But not to worry we only have 16 players available and he is shit so there...........

Having played against him dozens of times as a kid I would have to admit I'm maybe a bit biased when it comes to Deano's performances but I really do think anyone who doesn't rate him doesn't understand the game in enough detail.

You must be the sort of person who expects to 'physically see' something to know that it is working.

Hammond certainly didn't have a great game yesterday but I would say the same for the majority of the team. Dean has the ability to play well as attacking midfielder or a holding player which should give Wilkins a lot of options on who he can bring in during this transfer window.

We MUST ensure that Hammond signs a long term deal before the end of the season because the chances of us signing TWO midfielders as good as him in January or the summer are ZERO!

I don't believe in dropping him but I do think he has had a bad season. Dropping him is not the answer because we haven't got anyone to come into his place. We have just lost a VERY good and creative player in O'Callaghan and raser isn't good enough

agree with that - hammond seems to go missing in large chunks of games, yet unless we strengthen the midfield, then there is no way you can afford to drop him

In terms of the captaincy, I understand his position as club captain etc, but surely this is undermined when he's playing in a side with two loud and vastly experienced players as Forster and Butters...I've personally thought Forster has seemed the main leader on the field since he signed.

Agreed, equally O'Callaghan looked more of a captain when he was here. Would have prefered either Forster or Kuipers given the captancy at the start of this season.

For me Hammond seems low on confidence for some reason, taking the captancy away from him would destroy him even more.

He has been poor this season but he is a good player.

I think it's hard to judge for anyone outside the squad and management just how good a captain he is. The team seem to respect him and have a good spirit which must be at least partly down to his captaincy. Captaincy and leadership isn't just down to being the most experienced or vocal, Steve Foster was a pretty quiet bloke. As for his playing ability I think he is underrated by a lot of people. You don't always notice him when he's playing but you notice when he's not (last season for example). Also, taking penalties is never easy whether you're a pro or not. The fact he has such a good record from the spot says a lot about his nerve and talent.
