Deaf Albion Fans

Whilst I don't like to pigeon-hole myself, unlike Richard Gere (or was that a Hamster?), I was thinking about setting up an Albion group of deaf people/persons.

I'm currently learning sign language and haven't met many deaf people over the years. So I thought it would be nice to meet some fellow Albion fans that have been through similar experiences.

I'm deaf in one ear. I felt dreadful for the bloke who used to sit to my left to me at Withdean who must have thought I was always ignoring him when in truth I just couldn't hear him! Apart from that and not being able to ride a bike and it causes little impact in my life.

There is a deaf chap who goes quite regularly to away games, don't know him personally but seen him at a fair few.

I am studying it at Sussex Uni. £140 for level one (which is very basic). You can enrol now - Courses commencing in October 2011 : Open courses in modern languages : ... : Sussex Centre for Language Studies : University of Sussex - starts 10/10/11.

Being deaf in one ear must be an arse. Do you both feel a little imbalanced?

Not really since I was born with it so I don't know any different, although I could never do forward rolls as a kid at school cause I veered off to one side.

Some clubs do a free commentary service for blind supporters, we probably don't of course... but then there is always southern counties.

We have dedicated commentry at the albion. It was set up through the soccer sight project. You need to contact the club & they loan you the head sets. The commentator is called Steve & he is very good

I'm not deaf but hard of hearing & wear hearing aids (not match days as it's too noisy).
I have passed my level 1 in B.S.L. Well worth learning as at least it beaks the ice with deaf ppl who have B.S.L. as a first language.

My son is Profoundly deaf and a BSL signer. I learnt sign to chat to him. Lucky that, as I am now losing my hearing. We are and have been season ticket holders for years. We are always glad to meet fellow signers particularly those of an Albion persuasion. We always have fun with the Albion and fellow supporters. One great occasion was at Norwich a few years back when we had a couple of rows of supporters singing and signing albion songs. So all who learn to sign welcome and do stop us for a chat. We are in the East Stand row H near the half way line, just look for the signers!

I'm deaf in one ear, yet bizzarely work in subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing. All the signers here are deaf and use BSL (obviously), so I really should get around to learning it. Also a good idea if the other ear gives up too. If anyone can recommend a good place to learn it in London or maybe an online course as I work very variable hours, that would be great.

From what i understand alot of deafness is nerves dying in the ear (?) and several groups have made a major breakthrough so that new nerves can be re-grown and it is hoped with support (£) this treatment could start within 10/15 years. I could be wrong however it is pleasing to see this Govt & Labour waste BILLIONS on the national medical record database that will never work or be or use when it could have helped so many more worthy causes.
