Supposedly, his coach was quizzed by a Russian swimming coach about Wilkies tache, the Russian thought it would be detrimental to his speed as a swimmer as it might cause more drag. Wilkies coach told him that they had found that it actually had the opposite effect and the tache reduced drag in the water, but a beard did create drag. Next season all the Russian swimmers had taches, and Wilkies coach was pissing himself as he had just made it all up.

I’m sure he came to Motcombe baths in Eastbourne when I was at Eastbourne Swimming club , at primary school age, and did a demonstration swim. He was a legend.

Felt slightly sad when I heard this news. Initially thought he was from around the 90's or even 2000 Olympics as I knew the name so well. Surprised at his age and that is was 1976. We all are getting old.
