Possibly was the best Sport shop on Brighton & Hove.

I drove past it the other day and saw it had sloced down.

Apparently David Rose died   Very sad news.

That is all.

It is with a heavy heart that I am forced to take my business elsewhere....

I used to work at David Rose and yes he did die. Micheal never wanted to carry on the business even before David died as it was making a heavy loss as far as i was aware and i didnt think it would be around for much longer anyway.

Intersport in Lewis is also very good and they had good links with David Rose Sports.

My first ever Albion kit came from David Rose (the Pheonix Brewery one with "FA Cup Finalists 1983 above the badge). Sorry to hear it is no more...:(

Did he try and sell it as a going concern?

Not that it matters too much now, I suppose.

I got my first Albion kit from David Rose Sports when it was in Dyke Road. 1978, Bukta, stretchy knitted blue and white striped shirt, blue shorts with the Bukta stripes, white socks with two blue bands at the top, and a pair of Gola boots.

Not bad for a ninth birthday present. Seemed to recall it came to £32 all in :)

Thanks for the info. one and all. Very sad. David Rose was a legend and I didn't realise it had been closed for so long.

I did go to Swift sports in the end and as you say, so decent stuff there! Nice to see some Albion shirts hung with the Chelski & Arsenal shirts.

You see, it's all wrong nowadays.

All the High Street sports shops seem to only specialise in pikey gear. England shirts, Chelsea shirts, Manchester United shirts all at knock down prices. The excess power of the corporate conglomerates employing lunkheads with a bolt through their necks, purely aimed at profit at the expense of service.

David Rose Sports
AA Baker
Swift Sports

I am sure there are plenty more - all gone (yeah, alright I know Swift Sports is still there but you know what I mean). In a city this size, there is only one quality sports shop - that's disgraceful. David Rose Sports is symbolic of a dying trend - a trend that needs to be reversed. Whatever happened to knoweldge, service and integrity in your local sport shop? What ever happened to them in ANY shop?

You go into a shop and see a row of football boots or cricket bats, all at massively different prices, and you ask the assistant what is the difference between each type of bat, why one is one price, and one is another? In JJB, Sports Soccer etc, you get a monosyllabic grunt. In a REAL sports shop, you get intelligent responses, someone prepared to discuss your needs and requirements, someone who knows what they are on about. It doesn't take much, and the customer is so much more grateful for it.

But where are these places? You see, it's all wrong nowadays.

I avoid the other shops (JJB etc.) at all cost. As you say, they have the usual gear aimed at leisure wear rather than sports wear. It is extremely difficult to find specialist shops for cricket etc.

There is a fantastic shop in Oxford that mainly specialises in cricket, hockey and rugby. They do well as they have two universities located near the city centre.

The demise of the smaller shop - The internet and the big chains.

It is a crying shame, but what can be done?

What was the one in Duke street? Wisden Sports or summit?
David White Sports in Burgess Hill was Ok too.

Used to get all of our stuff from the Dyke Road shop, then one day, old David slapped by brother (14 years old) around the head. Not a good idea! We obviously spoke to old bill. Who gave him a severe warning.

Been a **** ever since.

Theres a Wisden's in Hastings which is very good.

Unfortunately the Sports Soccer in Brighton and the new one in Eastbourne are just to cheap to ignore.
