Can’t really argue with his decision here. He’s gone to a famous club, with a huge stadium and CL football. Of course, they aren’t actually ever winning it and everything else beyond home games and a few big clubs will just be a non event. But maybe that’s what some players want?

The release clause is mental, it pretty much means he’s never leaving all the time he has a contract. Unless he’s the next global star, nobody is paying that. Especially if we’ve seen the peak of what clubs are willing to spend.

Release clauses are set way above market value as standard. If someone offers an acceptable fee next summer, Benfica will sell.

Jesus. Just went to have a look at attendances for the Primeira Liga. peterward is being too kind if anything

Some real League 2 numbers in here. And all but three of the league titles have been won by just three clubs, in the entire history of the competition.

Club | Avg. attendance | Capacity
Benfica | 53,209 | 64,642
Sporting CP | 43,623 | 50,044
Porto | 42,674 | 50,431
Vitória de G. | 16,015 | 30,008
Braga | 11,706 | 30,286
Marítimo | 7,072 | 10,932
Boavista | 5,623 | 30,000
Vitória Set. | 4,111 | 13,468
Feirense | 3,907 | 5,600
Rio Ave | 3,889 | 9,065
Chaves | 3,627 | 9,000
Paços de F | 3,507 | 6,404
Belenenses | 3,344 | 19,856
Portimonense | 3,158 | 9,544
Aves | 2,635 | 5,441
Tondela | 2,373 | 5,000
Estoril | 2,275 | 8,000
Moreirense | 2,264 | 6,153

That's truly shocking.

Still. I went on holiday there some years ago and drove inland from the south coast. The roads were made of sand. Sand. I was expecting any moment to see Clint Eastwood riding over the bluff.

Bear in mind Portugal's population is similar to London's. Porto is the second biggest city and is smaller than Southampton. The club with the lowest attendance in that list is half the size of Lewes.

Sounds like Scotland without the rain. Or the jocks.

No wonder he chose Portugal over Brighton.

If you go to rural Spain you will find C roads that are all gravel and sand. Not recommended in low sprung cars but the roads are OK, you just don't drive fast. Mid Summer, crickets clicking, sweltering heat, driving through out of the way villages in Andalucia, stopping for the odd refreshment. Quiet villages with just the wisened faces of old guys sitting on chairs outside their front doors. Fabulous memories, what a great Country Spain is....

Yep, and absolutely nothing wrong with that. Charming and beautiful in many ways. It's just a comparison of the two leagues, one being 80% populated with small town / village teams. Crazy really and no wonder you're only going to get an upset at the top of the league once every century.

Chelsea vs Lewes twice a year... 6 points for Chelsea, every year

Darwin started on the bench. Benfica have six centre forwards in their squad so the competition is huge for the single spot at the top of their 4-2-3-1 formation.

After they went 1-0 down, Darwin got his chance replacing some Brazilian winger as they clearly tried to go more attacking. Within 10 minutes, they were 2-0 down. Jesus!

Hope he is enjoying his time in Portugal so far.

I’m not bitter by the way.............honest!

He'd have scored the header from Lamptey's cross.

Always thought these type of men in Spain/Greece for example are mainly bone idle types dossing around in the village all day drinking and talking a load of shite with their pals. What a life :)

I'm struggling to believe he didn't cast an eye over our game, before jogging out to yet another 'practice' match, and not have even a thought on how he might have affected the game.
