I'm not sure either - the need (if need there is) would be for an out and out LB should we want to go 4 at the back. Solly and BDB are fine as LWBs, but neither of them is really suited for LB. I've got a feeling that might apply to Karbownik as well.

Tbh I don’t really get the clamour for a new LB. Solly was immense prior to his injury, and Dan Burn is brilliant in his own way.

Forward options are far, far more important to improve.

Yes, as LWBs, not as LBs. There's a big difference! - and if we want to go 4 at the back anything like regularly, we will need a specialist LB (and I'm not sure we've got one in the U23s in that position ready to step up).

Well sometimes targets don't work out - and as with Gonzalez , players can choose to go elsewhere but club are clearly briefing journalists that they are "looking".
Not sure Welbeck signing on makes any difference here . Looks like its Welbeck, Maupay + *new signing* , and a 2nd tier of Zeqiri, Andone, Connolly with perhaps 1 or none of those staying as a fourth option. He might keep Zeqiri given he's more flexible (wing back option !!) than the other two.

If we have money and given we bid for Gonzalez I assume we have, and we expect to sell at least one of the 'crown jewels' this window I'd be quite surprised if we didn't break our transfer record this summer. There is so little money around in Europe we'd be mad not to spend this summer if we can. We can potentially pick up talent at a level we normally couldn't and at a discounted price too. Cash is very much king this window our bigger problem may be creating spaces in the squad to fill with new players.

For the sake of the squad we need another striker a new face gives players a lift if they come with a good track record. Maupay needs the pressure release of not being the main man he clearly struggled last season with it. Welbeck has quality that’s for sure yet we all know he isn’t going to manage a full season which is problematic.

Agreed, I suspect this is the way Tony's viewing things. He's played 'moneyball' for four years in investing more money/quality in the defence rather than big name goalscorers. He's far more likely to go for it in this context. And, I'd add, that France would be where they're scouring availability, given their economic downturn.

I agree and hope it is France, not just because of the financial situation but players from the French league undoubtedly settle better and quicker here than any other league as it is the most similar in style to the Premier League. The success rate of Premier league clubs signing players from France is much higher than anywhere else.
