We've got Dunk to replace him. Or Duffy. We don't need to spend the money on a replacement. It was a fairly unique situation that Dunk Duffy and Webster were all unavailable at the same time. If it happens again, one of our rapidly maturing youngsters will step up. No need to panic.

Farewell big Dan and thanks for your always 100% commitment.

But if we want to play 3 at the back, then it’s the next set of players you need to look at. Maybe we feel some of the youngsters are ready.

I've seen nothing to suggest they are, but there is where Potter, Ashworth and co. earn their money, either Roberts is good enough now to step up or he isn't. That's the judgement call. Would've been better if we had a preseason to look at him and not lose one of our best players in recent months

I'm amazed everyone thinks this is such a great deal for BHA. £13m for an experienced top 10 PL centreback who's got a good 4-5 years in him, is playing regularly, and is (was) an important member of the team, particularly with his versatility. When we don't need the money, and have got a desperate club loaded with cash by the bollocks on the other end of the line. £13m in todays market is piss.

Who could we go out and get for £13m to replace him ? Some Championship youngster with 'potential' ? Or perhaps some bloke from a midtable club in Belgium. Great.

Understand your disappointment but you don’t seem to have much faith in the people at our club who made this decision. We paid £4m, had his best years and sell him for £13m. Good business.

BDB is the player he is because of the confidence he has in the coaching and players around him. At NU he will definitely have lower quality around him and this may effect his game.
Good luck to him though if it is what he wants, lets face it many of us would have loved to have had the quality to put on an Albion shirt and play for the team. I am not sure how much or little I would accept to play for the team I love.
The reported £13 Mill is a good return although it will cost the Albion more, in time and/or money, to replace him.

Thank You Dan, I have really enjoyed watching you play in the Blue and White Stripes of the Albion!!

I was lucky enough to be at The Amex for his goal against Man City last year which will be my abiding memory of him. Really sad to see him go, but all the best to him.

Unless you are one of big clubs a good model is to raise money on player sales to help with transfer fund etc. Southampton have survived over years doing this, Brentford sold CF and midfielder for 60m and even Leicester sold Chilwell for 50m

Not sure if it's good business or not. A profit of £9 million but his form during Dunk's injury has been imperious. He is a vastly improved player under Potter.

I hope he does well and becomes a fans' favourite at his boyhood club. I also hope they crash and burn, so it will be a tricky conundrum for him to solve! Wish him well, anyway - for sure he'll be a wealthy young man now.

Think the fee is too low - should have held out for at least £15M, or eve £20M, IMHO. Sadly, that idea is reinforced by the Newcastle fans, who generally seem to think they've mugged us off too.

A good deal for all parties IMO. Providing Brighton don’t suffer 3 injuries & suspensions to their CBs at once again.

Burn gets to play for his boyhood club and to keep them up ahead of a potential windfall of investment. He’ll be very happy.

Brighton get £13M for a 29 year old with 18 months left on their contract. A good and enhanced price. It also solves a headache of extending his deal / moving him on later. At 29 I can’t see Burn being worth more than £13M now. The squad will keep Dunk, Webster and Veltman as first choice CBs with Duffy 4th and Roberts 5th. Not a disaster situation.

The biggest loser from all this, unfortunately, is Potter. He’s lost one of his players he was intending to keep. Clearly a fan of Burn and his versatility. But this does provide an opportunity to others, and next season I expect the next young CB (Van Hecke?) to be integrated into the first team squad, a challenge Potter will enjoy too.

This also shows to the rest of the squad how much Brighton value players and development, but also no player is priced out of a move elsewhere. Should help convince our other starts with running down contracts to sign extensions.

This won't have been done without Potter's extensive input....he'll be happy with the options (and indeed opportunities) this leaves. I reckon if we were in 16th or 17th on 20 points there's no way we would have done this deal but as it is, it's a very decent price in the circumstances (short contract, price paid etc). Wish BDB all the very best, been brilliant for us particularly in the last few weeks.

Best sell Maupay and Biss too then - as they will go for nothing in 18 months too.
Nobody knows when contract discussions take place , but you would hope both those 2 are in discussions now and the club are offering decent wages
And Trossard and Mac Allister and Veltman and Duffy and Lallana and Khadra and Sarmiento and others.

All walking away on frees in the Summer of Doom ( 2023 ).

Real shame he is going, loved the effort he always put in. We will have sold him for very good value as no way Barber, Ashworth and Potter don’t know what there doing. Potter either feels a youngster/ loanee can step up or maybe we’ll be in for the likes of Nat Phillips (supposedly £7m and only 24)

If Duffy and Dunk hadn’t been injured at the same time, do you think he’s a regular first team starter for us? Think his chances with us may not be that different to NU in the EPL if they survive. They may well invest, but I doubt that relegates him to any different to how he is with us - i.e. steps up when needed.

This is what I'm saying, £13m for our fifth choice CB is good business for us. For me we are better off.

Buy from Wigan for £4m
Sell to Newcastle, in the last realistic selling window, for £13m.

Have some great memories in between.

What's not to love?

The 30% going back to Wigan as part of the deal, or that was a figure quoted on here around the time we signed him.

The 30% going back to Wigan as part of the deal.

You'd have to have a particularly short memory to not accept that part of the deal.

The Albion have spent 110 years craving to get a slice of a £13m transfer.
Just because it's now chicken feed to our owner and fans doesn't make it chicken feed to #TeamsLikeWigan.
