Thinking a season ahead of the next, I think we should sign the right footed Liam Moore. i would be inclined to sign Dan Burn as well.

It would be a great to have a thread about a centre back target which didn’t turn into an argument between BG and various other posters. It’s all really quite repetitive and dull now.

Back on topic, I’ve always been quite impressed by Burn when I’ve seen him play. Seems quite a logical signing.

The club will not sign anyone, who they don't believe can't compete for a strarting slot in the first team. No one comes to the club as a makeweight for others. That is a measure of how ammitious we have become. We demand success.

Or sign a player that most definitely won't generate any money at the other end of the deal.

The advantage of signing a younger (under 25/26) player is they're more likely to be happy settling into the squad for a season (due to higher level) until they're really needed week in week out. We need someone who can play now if needed but who'll really push the starters towards the end of the season.

Older players will want to start now and only get worse once actually needed. By contrast you'd hope a younger player would have improved since we signed him.

So perhaps we should ask Chelsea how much they want for Gary Cahill

It wouldn’t matter how much Chelsea wanted. BG. He is probably on the thick end of 120 grand a week, he definitely wouldn’t be first choice for us, so, with a huge wage cut and maybe only a bench seat, if that, why on earth would he want to come to us?

He is 32 years old and his days at the top are short so it may prolong his playing career by a couple of years which he may want.

The most curious thing..
There is no point signing anyone for any first team position who could not step into the first team at a moments notice. For example Dunk or Duffy break a leg or tear knee ligaments we can't wait a couple of months for somebody to get up to speed - they have to be ready now.

If we want to sign somebody for the future they can go into the development squad and be forgotten there.

Cahill played in 27 league games last year and earns more than Albion can pay. Why would he change that ?

Wouldn’t take a player over 30 now from any of the top 4 teams, too expensive and which ever club they join, it can only be a step down and they have no long term resale value. Would much prefer to get players in on the way up as opposed to down.

But his wages are too high for us to pay. There would be no point in him taking a pay cut. And at he can choose a new club at the end of the season, how would extend his playing career to move to us now?

Simple maths 24 weeks @£100k= 2400 K after that future and income unknown,

2 year contract with us is 104 weeks @ 45k = 4680k guaranteed, nearly double.

He will go somewhere when his contract finishes at Chelsea or perhaps retire and go into the media but I would think another club and contract is favourite.
