Brighton will have earned my admiration for holding on to Stephens - similarly, I hope we manage to hold on to Michael Keane despite Leicester's pressure.

Money is not everything.

All along, I would have preferred Stephens to Hendrick, but one of them would be better than NONE.....Hendrick is overpriced at £10 million, but I reckon £7 million for Stephens would have been worth paying in the long run.

I reckon Hendrick is a phenomenal signing for you lot - even at £10m.

Too late...
1. For us to sign a replacement.
2. For him. He has had since May to do this but has left it to last day hoping to keep his loyalty bonus.

STEPHENS REQUESTS TO LEAVE
Too late Dale. The club told you they'd like to keep you. If you want to forgo your bonus and request a transfer, you don't do it on transfer deadline day.

Is it greed that would make him wait that late, if true? Disappointing in a Bridcutt way if true.

Players get 10% of the transfer fee if they don't request a move. So if true, he's basically waved 700k to try and push a move through.

???? We don't but why keep him if he wants away. We get nothing in the summer plus it may upset other teammates etc.. No brainer IMO. Sold to today's highest bidder
Only if we get a decent replacement in first.

He's not going to harm his career by sulking until January and getting the reputation of being difficult.

If that is true, then Stephens is a grasping prick.

I appreciate players will always want to better themselves and play in the PL if there is the opportunity, but there are ways and means of going about it, and handing in a transfer request a few hours before the window closes is a shitarsed move by him and his agent.

Now if we keep hold of him but he plays crap, then he's going to get dogs abuse for the rest of his time here. And rightly so.

I'd rather he rotted in the reserves for the rest of the season. If he wanted to go the time to do it was last week given there has been interest all summer. We now don't have time to replace him. Don't have anytime for players like that.

The timing is purely because he'd have been looking at a 5/700k payment if he didn't. So he'd have been hoping it would go through without having to put in a request. Request makes no difference really. Club will have known his position.

I have no inside knowledge but I don't subscribe to this view.

I can't believe that neither the club nor his agent hadn't let the club know they'd quite like to head off to pastures new/greener/richer/Match-of-the-Day-er and gave the club the opportunity to do what they felt was the right thing. And they probably felt that c£7m for a Championship midfielder with less than a year on his contract was decent enough compensation.

The club have not played ball, as is their right of course, so there is only one course of action available to him.

If he sees this as his chance to get to the promised land of the Premier League, what is he going to do? He's not an Albion fan, he'll have little loyalty to the club but he will very much want to progress his career and secure the future of his family.

Don't get me wrong, it's far from brilliant for the Albion, but if I put myself in his shoes, I imagine I'd be doing the same.

Bridcutt and Buckley anyone?
They've not exactly been world beaters since they moved on, after throwing wobblers about getting moves a couple of years ago have they? ???
