This really winds me up when I see this quoted, OK their career may be about a quarter of the average working Joe, but there salary is probably 8 times as much. Is that not a decent Payday?

Average championship salary is around £480k p/a
Average UK salary is somewhere around £30k p/a

The weird thing about that, frankly ludicrous quote, is that a football player can always do something else when they stop being a football player. They actually have many more options than other people whose skills become redundant. I think I'd trade my lifetime of work for half a dozen years earning footballer money. It would be all the sweeter since I'm quite crap at football.

Player salary numbers are from PFA figures to 200n9-2010 (£211k), inflated by 15% each year to 2016 to reflect wage increases. UK wage I basically made up.

EDIT: Daily Mail say average championship salary last season was £324k, so they are much worse off than I suspected. Poor dears.

The point is "Do THEY or their agents want to go?" No point in battling to keep a disaffected player as Albion and other tams have learned over the years.

If Stephens has only a year left on his contract you could spend the whole of next season with a man who wants out, particularly in the January window.

I think that's it in a nut shell. I know for a fact that dale wants Premier League football (obvious point) but my understanding is that he wants more than just a relegation dog fight. Burnley may not be in one this season but the current expectation is that they will.

So - does he wants to go because it is the Prem and he may get the Sidwell effect of the club struggling but him being snapped up by an established side. Or does he wait for other offers to come in, or wait to get there with us.

Either way, if we do not get promoted this season I expect he will not be around for the 17/18 season

Of course the situation would be helped if the Albion brought in a big signing now as statement of intent, to not just the fans but the players too.

I realise that it isn't easy for a club like the Albion to do that but for a club like Newcastle who can you can almost see them slipping into the Championship driver's seat with one hand on the ignition.

Part of me wishes we'd never signed Vicente in the first place. The fact we were able to bring in a player of that quality has given me a permanent irrational hope that we can do it again and it has clouded every transfer window ever since.
