Way out west
I was once offered the opportunity to buy a watch from a bloke in a car at the services on the M11, I told him that I wasn't interested and that I worked for Customs and Excise (which I didn't)...I don't think I have ever seen anyone look so worried or move so fast.

They don't make hardly any money selling fuel. It's other stuff like coffee's hot food, sweets, jet washes etc where they make there money.

BP, Shell, Texaco dont make hardly any money selling fuel? I find it hard to believe they keep their forecourts open for the love of it. They always argue that their forecourt margin is wafer thin but never seem to provide any figures to back it up.

Valid point... if its that bad why not get rid of those in the way fuel pumps and that would make room for more car parking for those people who desperately need Blue Tack, Alka Seltzer or a disposable razor ?:yahoo:

The best ones are motorway service stations.

I can't think what situation might befall me that, while filling my car up en route to Carlisle or wherever, I'd be overtaken by the need to buy a tin of shortbread with the Queen Mother's face on, a robotic dog toy, a Real Madrid plastic mobile phone covering or a bottle of olive oil with chillies in.

This is because the motorway service station is the natural home of people with awkward family relationships. Assuage your guilty feeling, brought about by stopping on your way to Newcastle-under-Lyme where your mother in law is in a home (thus making you later than you said you would be) by buying her some shortbread with the Queen Mum's face on.

Annoy your ex-partner by being late to pick up the kids on your one-weekend-a-month access visit, while simultaneously delighting the kids by giving them a robotic toy dog and a Real Madrid phone cover.

they dont make much, but then they are making what ever the difference is between them and the supermarkets. most forecourts are run as franchises anyway, the relationship is a bit like breweries and tied pubs. the brewery/oil co doesnt make much on the actuall sale per unit at the pump the profit comes from the manufacturing/refining stage and they then provide themselves with a sutiable retail outlet. theres also an argument that its difficult to sell abroad if noone is buying the stuff in thecompanies native territory, but thats probably an out of date idea now.

So, most forecourts are run as franchises. Whilst the bod who owns the franchise might not make a big margin when he sells to the public I suspect the margin on the gas being sold TO the forecourt is worthwhile? I also suspect if you take a franchise from say BP you are contractually obliged to buy your gas from them as well.

Don't laugh, your average petrol station probably still sells 5Star CDs on their music rack.

Along with Glenn Medeiros, the New Seekers and Daniel O'Donnell.
