You're very lucky Ninja Elephant.
If the cycling bug takes hold and you find yourself in this enclave, more than elsewhere on NSC.

Increase the DISTANCE (important, not time, you will get quicker) by no more than 10% for the next set of rides as this will take you too far out of your comfort zone.

Sorry Pantani but I think you've got that the wrong way round. Distance is, to some extent, artificial.

If I ride 80 miles and froome rides 80m, at the same "intensity" I will have done about 25% more work.

Training is ALL about time x intensity. Distance doesn't come into it, see this link from one of the godfathers of modern training, Joe Friel -

Just to clarify my spanner in the works over distance.

All I was meant was:-

Don't get bent out of shape over the exact distance to be traveled v distance trained for.

Eg If the journey is 2 x 80 miles, but Ninja has trained for and knows he can 'easily' do 2 x 65, although the extra distance may well be tough he'll still be able to do it.

The maximum distance I can ride at the moment is about 60 mile, which means I'm pretty sure I can ride 80 miles.
But I wouldn't attempt a 100 miles.

I agree with you SB though it might be more accurate to say, if he can ride for 4 hours then adrenaline of the day will get him to 5?

60 dead flat miles are a lot different from 60 miles in the alps.

First line of that article, "For the advanced athlete", I assuming NE is not an advanced athlete, yet. I was going on the basis that NE was going from a pretty low base and is trying to build his endurance up to being able to ride to Norwich in two days. As he gets fitter he will be able to ride further, faster, so if he adds 10% time to each ride the distance will soon get out of hand. For example, if he started doing two hour rides, then added 10% each time he would be doing three hour rides by his fifth ride and well over four hours by his ninth. If you stick to distance, as you get faster the time does not increase exponentially.

I'm in, now.
Just back from a fruitless spin, and managed to catch the last 10km of ToB.

One other thing Ninja Elephant.
Esp when starting out, you'll go out for a ride and for no reason it'll feel like 'Boris' has square wheels, and you have an open parachute strapped to your back.
C'est la vie.

If it really effects you, just have a couple of days off the bike (no more than that) and all will be fine.

Fortunately the opposite is also true, and for me at least, the sensation isn't just a newbie thing.
Someday's you'll ummm and ahhh about going out.
You'll almost force yourself into it, after a long bout of procrastination.
Then within 5 minutes it'll feel like you've sprouted wings, and you're wheels are barely touching the tarmac.

Happy days.

So true, though I feel he's hardly a newby after a ride like that?!

Any tips for keeping fit in the impending winter months? It's going to be hard to get much riding done after work with the nights drawing in.

Now I know what you're talking about.

It would seem 'blimey' covers that whole incident.

Fingers crossed it gets fully resolved in time honoured fashion:-

Tiny, skinny men in lycra, wearing cleats, swinging wheels at each other

Holy ****! That was epic. Won't put any spoilers up for those watching the highlights later, but yet again that was tremendous entertainment.

I'm not one for riding in the dark, but in an ideal world I want to be in good shape come April/May.

So I'm going to try and pretend winter isn't happening, and just wrap up.
If need be I'll be a 2 wheeled Blackpool illuminations, and only riding street lit routes.
Alternatively I could lay on the sofa eating cake.

Anything has to be better than sufferfest turbo sessions.

Enjoyed it too. Not impressed that we couldn't watch the whole stage though! It's not as if ITV4 is a major channel and they had important programmes to show.

Still onto Stage 3 tomorrow :D

Pantani is talking about the Vuelta, Tour of Spain.

The Tour of Britain explained drafting perfectly.
Matey only won because he had a teammate in front of him.
Fella that lost did so because he had no teammates left, so had to wind up for the finish early.

Plus the other rider couldn't make his much longer attack stick because of the bloke behind made for a stepping stone for everyone else.

Yes, drafting was in evidence today once I knew what I was looking for! That bloke who got a puncture was drafting behind his team car! I'm learning!

Everyone is allowed to get away with that, for a bit.
The trick is not to take the wee-wee.
Much like 'sticky bottle', the taking of a drinks bottle (bidon) from a team car.
