Yes, it's a compact. That means the gearing is a little less harsh than your standard double. As Banjo has said, triples make it even easier, but the Velominati will tell you that you are cheating.

They are cheap, but it's a false economy. You will either be turned off cycling, or will upgrade quickly. It's worth holding on, and paying more in my opinion.

At Notters' £250 Pogue Mahone has flagged him something up that's definitely worth a look. For your £250 you get something half decent to start on as the frame is proven and it's a compact so the introduction is gentle. If Notters wants to, at a later date and over time, he can upgrade the wheels and the group set and he's got himself a decent bike. But at £360 for that, over £100 over budget and overpriced before he starts, it's just crazy.

[MENTION=1320]Notters[/MENTION], why not find out what finance offers some LBSs are doing. You'd be much better off sitting on a variety of bikes to see which feels best for you. Then you could get brand new, with a couple of free services and pay over 12 months.

It had passed £300. It seemed cheaper than 2013 Allezs usually go for, and I didn't look closely enough at the specs.

Well known brands - you know what you're getting, frame-wise, which is quite important. I'd struggle to know whether other frames are any good.

I'd hold out you can always buy an end of range bike much cheaper. I brought mine nearer the end of the year and saved £300 on a brand new bike.
