Loving this stage 1 of Le Tour. Crowds are immense. Is this another turning point?

Hello Everybody, I'm back. I've decided not to pick a fantasy team for this, looked at it the other day and decided I just could not be bothered. So just bets for me this Tour. Nothing on today's stage though, there really is no value, e/w punts on second tier sprinters is just a waste of time, imo.

Took a pre-TDF ride along to Worthing this morning in a stiff breeze. It got me to wondering, what do you enjoy more? Riding into the wind or up hills?

Obviously, you can say you enjoy riding up hills into the wind, but if you do I'll think you mad and not enter into correspondence with you.

Up hills. Less boring and more picturesque!

As bad (fat) as I am I still prefer riding up hill.
Riding into a strong wind is soul destroying.

I like a deliberate typo from time to time.

Hills or wind? Hills. Not sure my head can get around having to work so much harder than it should. Plus the fact, you know a hill has a certain end.

We'll I've huffed and puffed up the steyning Bostal a few times thank god its not much longer.

Harting Down west to east is the longest climb I know of in the better half of Sussex.

There's a short sharp decent 3/4ers of the way up, either side of sharp climbs.
But the road itself starts to gradually climb (just 1-3%) from Lavant a good 6 or 7 miles from the summit.

Coming down the other side is like falling off a cliff.

What route are doing ? I'm not a massive fan of hills but have to do them to make you appreciate the rest of the ride..

Most simply: Maidstone, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks. Smith's Hill, Gedge's Hill, Groombridge Hill and Carter's Hill.

Thanks. I rank too low down those leader boards, so will try and spin up more. Only done Carter's once; its the steepest. Doing it last is just silly.

I want to go to Yorkshire now, it look absolutely beautiful and those climbs look fun.

Fortunately for me I am heading up to Durham for 6 weeks this summer so was wondering whether anyone had any experience of cycling in that neck of the woods and could provide any inspiration for some interesting rides. I think I might have to venture down into North Yorkshire though at least once to get a taste of some more TdF parcours!

With the exception of 1/2 a mile of steep enough descent it's 7 miles of climbing.
I was up there a few weeks ago, and did the climb into enough of a head wind to know it was there.
The first 'gentle' 4 miles are very exposed.

As said coming down the other side is 's' bend-tastic, and like falling off a cliff.
If at the bottom you turn left, you're straight into a 10+% climb that touches 17% in places.

Although Lancey-poohs is on BBC4 at 9 pm, he's followed by Velorama.

A Storyville BFI presentation on 100 years of cycling.
I imagine it'll be very good.
