Hey geeks, I can actually call myself a cyclist, again.

Following yesterdays really successful sportive, I've actually got off my lazy fat ass and been on a bike ride.
Nothing too serious, as it was just to prove I could do it.
16 miles, 3 of which up cols!!, nothing Strava busting, but I'm back comfortably inside an hour, and am happy with that.

Fingers crossed I can kick on now, regain some fitness, and get a bit of control over my physique.

On and the roads are even worse than before, and that's saying something.

Happy days.

You must absolutely acknowledge fellows like yourself. This in my view is part of the way of life.

Fair enough. I will smile, wave and maybe even tip the peak of my cycling cap* to other roadies around the Staffordshire lanes.

*this reminds me, I need to get a cycling cap

Like it. Tipping the cap! You see, that sounds classy, knowing and welcoming.

Well done, I am also in the process of turning back in to someone who actually rides their bike. I have been pretty much exclusively a commuter cyclist for the last year and I am now FAT. Still have the appetite of someone who rides 100 miles a week, but only manage to ride 10, not a good combination.

As long as it is just roadies you acknowledge. Any mountain bikers you are to steadfastly pretend they do not exist, and vice versa if you are riding a mountain bike. That is just the way of things.

Hello geeks, as a new cyclist I have an 'cycling etiquette' question.

When I am out on my steed, should I give a wave or friendly nod to other roadies? Living on the fringes of the Black Country, I have been conditioned not to make eye contact with strangers, as it may lead to getting stabbed. Anyway, waving or nodding to other cyclists isn't something I have done in the past, but I have read this blog and wondered whether I am being a little ignorant (from Rapha, so it is bound to be a little pretentious): Rapha: THE TICKET TO RIDE.

Also, I bought some new rubber for my steed at the weekend because the blue-walled tyres will look damn good with the blue trim on my bike, can't wait to get them on!
You know this isn't going to be simple, right?

Yes you acknowledge your fellow roadies, but...

- Only roadies.
No other cyclist is worthy of your gesture.

- Less is more.
A simple slight nod or flick of your right fingers is sufficient.

- Introduce your arrival.
Don't sit silently on the wheel of a stranger on the road.

- Stay silent.
If your going to blast straight past with your impressive 'quad power'.
(You better make that stick).

- No climbing encouragement.
Stick your patronising up your ass.

Any more?

Or if riding single speed/fixed, ignore everyone...

(Maybe that's just me)

Oh strings, as your new to road cycling, one further aspect you should know at this time:-

Your Winter Olympic sport default setting is now - Speed Skating.

It's steeped in cycling tradition going back to the days when the 'pros' of the low lands would use Speed Skating to keep fit in the winter.

I'll expect a full dissertation by the morning

- If you pass a fellow cyclist when climbing and they choose to acknowledge you then you must mention how tiring this climb is for you, even if it is not.

Well done!

16 miles and comfortably within an hour? I call that a pretty good pace, especially in this weather (unless you were heading East all the way!)

Good to hear you're back in the saddle

I'm on the waiting list for The Puncheur - too much faffing around on my part owing to managing my son's U8's team. Anyway, I might get lucky if someone drops out.

Here's hoping.

Are you going to do the 1066 sportive?

Thanks Geeks.
No I was north to south, I headed up to Whiteways and back.
It was my starting point, back in the day.
There was a time when it was my 'quick sprint' route, not today though.

I did need to dig in for the first part of the climb, but the rest was better than I could have expected.
I was more timid on the descents than I'd anticipated.

Here's hoping.

Are you going to do the 1066 sportive?
Based on Sundays Sportive, held on a cold windy February morning, sportive places are going to be a premium.
We arrived early, and it was already rammed.
We didn't pre-book and were numbers 70/71 of the pay on the dayers, with plenty more to come.

Like so many of the cyclists, we are using this as a bit of a training run, sitting up, letting you have the 'glory'. Enjoy it while you can...

It points im racking up now, you'll be lucky to catch me before Bejing.

I'm not going to quote back any of the cliche's of 'its a marathon not a sprint'.

Anyway, what's going on? I miss the first two stages (forgot to pick a team) and still bounce into mid table after a simple time trial!?
