A colleague had the 09 Allez TRIPLE and having had very little service and being ridden 30 miles every day for with the bottom bracket and crank have died at last. That seems pretty durable (especially for Sora parts). Frame is a good weight. The usual weak spot with Specialized bikes is the diabolical tyres they come with. Poor grip and very puncture prone.

If I were you I'd also look at Giant and Scott.

Cumbersome doesn't quite cut it. I've seen a sack of spuds with a better riding position.

He probably wants to watch this video...

Is there anything in the world of 2 wheels, this thread can't (at least try) help you with?

All the general advise always applies.
Even though most bikes are very very similar, esp @ the entry level and just above price point.
There are little tweaks and finishing touches that can improve/ruin the ride.

Back in the day, I tested 4-5 different bikes, each was a little different except one that was completely different.

What should have been the stand out bike, prior to my own, was the Spech Roubaix, and I just couldn't ride it, it was a dog.
The feel was completely different to the Bianchi I brought.
The Roubaix is one of Spech's biggest sellers but it just didn't work for me.

That's the point, you need to know what's right for you.
You'll be surprised how intuitive you get after just a couple of different rides.

If you find THE bike, you'll want to ride it more and more, as opposed to finding A bike.

I think I break the rule. Had a go on my Scott and fell in love with it after 200 yards (involved a few tight bends and some speed humps). Came with shit Hutchinson tyres though, they were swapped within a month.

The most important thing, as has been said before is too try before you buy.

Evans(?) used to do trial days for MTB, don't know if they do a road version. If they do it will be well worth going to one of them.

The above is good advice although I'd say Its hard to buy a rubbish bike these days - even at the £600ish price point they've usually got a good frame at their heart and then finished off with good components although there'll always be some (eg tyres) that you want to upgrade straight away.

Its bonkers the type of thing you can get if you can spend 900-1k.

Anyway, they all (more or less!) come out of the same factory! inrng : who made your bike

Just in case we haven't put you off a 'cheap' carbon frame, he's another thing.

It's probably playground rumours and Chinese whispers, but there is a school of thought that carbon frames can't be trusted and are too brittle in the cold.
Personally I'm not sold on the idea but if there is any truth I can guarantee it's more likely to effect the bottom of the market, instead of the top.

Oh and compact or double, no point having a triple unless you are a big gay goose.

As I said, assuming your local is Fatbirds, I'd definitely try:-

Cinelli Experience Black Veloce Road Bike - www.fatbirds.co.uk

You'll be able to get better bike/frame/fork combos, but it's a good place to start.

Thanks for the heads up. I noticed the Cinelli Black frame hanging on a wall when I was in Fatbirds last week but didn't there was a deal on a complete bike.

BTW How do you know of Fat Birds - and are they worth dealing with?

Canaryland - Titanium frames - memorable name = Fatbirds, Norfolk

I might have brought some bits from them, I know one cycling buddy does shop with them. I'm pretty sure they have a good reputation. Plus they have a Veloce cyclocross bike, I'm itching to get my fat little fingers on.

I think if I'd ridden my Bianchi first it would have been very difficult to test ride others.

Stoichkov is right with both his points. At that price, they do all come from the same factory, but there are geometry differences, hence us all banging on about test riding. Plus a reputable brand isn't going to sell you a dog, but there are differences.

Eg, The Spech sizes are even nos 44-64cm, the Bianchi predominately odd, 45-61cms.
That's before adding seat post and headset angles, it's all very little things which might not effect you due to your particular size.

Oh and just to complicate the matter further, just like a car, you've gotta love the look of your bike, don't settle.

Well that's my initial Giro team done.
I've followed my tired and tested formula of spending all my cash on stars, and picking dom's from the bargain basement.

I have a 100% record so far, so why change!

Anyone else see the email about going Pro on the fantasy cycling league? I don't think I'll worry to much about it.

Yes, I think I'm gonna stick with the free version. It would be nice to have a few more competitions and the chance of winning more stuff, but £10 (£7 if you sign up before the Giro) is a little steep for what is essentially a bit of fun. Also who wants to pick a team for the Tour of Britain or GP Cycliste Quebec/Montreal (whatever that is)? If they had made it £5 from the start I may have considered it but as it is no chance.

Too true.

Away from the holier than thou thread on doping, what are you're opinions on Millar and Chambers being allowed in the Olympics?

I'm of the opinion that if they can enter other competitions why not the Olympics?

It will be interesting how Millar reacts.
It does fly in the face of how he's dealt with his demons.
As he often says, that was the law when I doped, and I doped, I knew what was a risk'.
