I biked from Peacehaven for the Gills evening game and apart from a mild heart attack at the top of Woodingdean near the old bread factory found it an easy option! Plenty of spaces in the 'official' rack and never thought once that me bike was gonna get trashed..

Got to Rottingdean high st before any bus went past on the way back though probably pissed off a few motorists trying to overtake going up the Falmer road :)

Not sure but one shouted 'wanker' as he roared past presumably after being held up for 20 seconds due to the oncoming traffic..wasn't you was it?

Nip over the downs if you do it again. Great views and quicker

Only if it was a motorcyclist about 1 1/2 after the game as i stayed behind for a pie & a pint.

PS you should ride closer to the kerb so they can get by

In the programme for the tottenham game it says there are 234 covered cycle racks t be found at the AMEX. So far I've counted zero.

How do I get on to the downs from Peacehaven? Can I start from Telscombe village and where does it lead me too?

There are a couple of ways starting from the point at the top of Telscombe Tye where the lane descends into the village.

1. Head down into the village on the lane and as you climb up the other side a bridleway leads off to the left that heads down into Cricketing Bottom where some barns are located. Follow the bridleway down and just beyond the barns you join up with the South Downs Way. Turn left and push your bike up Mill Hill which is west of Rodmell. Once at the top follow the South Downs along the ridge of the Downs to turning west above Kingston then north until you reach another bridleway junction. You can take either. Head west and you join the road that links Falmer to Woodingdean or head north to take you down to the Newmarket Inn and across the A27 via the farm bridge to join the cycle path.

2. Another route heads west from the same point on Telscombe Tye and takes you to Balsdean. Along the way there are two bridleways that head east, one joins the South Downs Way above Iford and joins the first route. Another in Balsdean valley also gives you options one heads to Kingston to join the South Downs Way, the second goes through Falmer Bottom then steeply climvs Newmarket Hill which has the big transmitting aerial on, once at the top you join a bridleway that heads west to the Falmer-Woodingdean road.

Hill wise - going there route one only has Mill Hill which is too steep to cycle up, after that it follows the ridge of the Downs. Route two has climbs if you veer off to join the South Downs Way, and another going up Newmarket Hill which is straight up .

I did a test run on saturday along the Lewes rd riding my 16" wheeled fold up bike towing a loaded trailer and it was a bit nerve racking with buses and lorrys speeding by. I think i shall find a route though the back streets of Moulscome and then ride up the path that runs up behind the station.

I would suggest either of these two routes:

cycle to amex.jpg

The main one leaves you on the lewes road longer, but you still have the cycle lane, and when you enter Moulsecoomb (if the idea is a little off-putting) you're still visible from the main lewes road for the most part. At the top there is an alternative route, but that is primarily a footpath for pedestrians. (the road just to the left of that arrow is coldean lane)

The orange route gets you off lewes road sooner (at the avenue that leads to bevendean opposite moulsecoomb library), but it involves cycling up hillside, though you get to go down widdicomb way before another little up hill up moulsecoomb way before it all becomes down hill until lucraft.

At the end of Lucraft you come to the formerly Falmer School (now BACA), where you'll find the new tarmac path leads all the way to the stadium.

This looks good to me its takes me of the main road for a big chunk of my journey.
Thanks for that
