Must admit I hadn't bothered with Doctor Who until I heard the Cybermen were back, had to watch it last night...

Have to say the in between ones are the scariest for me. Remember when I was about 5 or 6, I was so proud I told my mum I had managed to stay in the same room, when the Cybermen were on the screen :D

One of the best things was Billie's waitressing outfit

The good thing for the writers of Dr Who, is that all these old episodes and scripts can be revived for new episodes.
The kids watching the new Doc, are oblivious to the fact that this has all been seen and done before.

Saying that, I expect a lot of stuff was nicked from other things that preceded the original show anyway. Cybermen probably came from 'Metropolis', and other ancient sci-fi (like Flash Gordon) will have provided ideas too.

I watched some old William Hartnell shows from the early days of Dr Who (he was the first Dr) and they looked really corny and amateurish. You could see the household objects turned into props, and diving suits spray-painted with silver, and realise that they obviously used toilet plungers on other planets.
Amusing to see, but those were, after all, early days for what-has-now-become a stalwart, trusty and endless series.

Know exactly what you mean, have just watched Rememberance of the Daleks, with Peter Davison (yes the one with Leslie Grantham) and some of the props were awful then, let alone now. Was from 1984 I think, compared to "Day of the Triffids" from the same era

The problem with these Cybermen is they march about and you can hear them comming. Middle ones were the best.

Some of the early monsters were slightly amateurish.

They can be updated, yes. They just be reruns tho, and they won't have the same plots.

Cybermen were pretty cutting edge, hence the reason for being so frightening. Of course they were nicked and turned into the Borg. 'You will be assimilated'...just the same way the cybermen change people into there own...

I think the Hartnell era is legendary. It seems dated now, but if you can get past the fact it black and white - and try not to laugh at the crap costumes, it really has something. Such imagination. A Traveller who can go anywhere in space - and anywhere in time. No wonder the show has been running as long as it has.

It's easy to dismiss the early years, but I love 'em!
