For the price of 42p a day Johnson is going to try to make the public believe that by abolishing the licence fee - and so doing away with any check and balance on media moguls like Murdoch and Viscount Rothermere - this will somehow help out with the cost of living.

The sad thing is, the British public will fall for it. Cummings has taught him how to find a scape goat.

Right wingers hate the BBC. Left wingers hate the BBC. That tells me it's a good thing.

They seem strange if you equate Conservatism with "one-nation" Tories like John Major, Chris Patten, etc. But the Tory party these days is reactionary, populist and self-serving. They couldn't give a monkey's about the Union, they're trashing the NHS, closing down free speech (right to protest, etc), demonising "foreigners", bringing in laws which amount to voter suppression, sticking two fingers up at the norms of good governance, treating the Royal Family like sh1t, etc, etc. I could on (and on). It's all about enriching themselves and their mates. Unfortunately the vast majority of the British population can't see (or won't see) what's happening. Perhaps in a few years time we may all wake up to the nightmare that we've allowed to happen....but I fear not.

This 100%.

They are national socialists. Everything they do is soft fascism in its nature. Slowly they will get more and more hardline, and they'll create hardliners as they go. If ever a centrist Tory or Labour government was needed, it's now.

You could batter them about the face with this (spot-on) post, and they still wouldn't see/feel it.

The BBC licence fee will be abolished in 2027 and the broadcaster’s funding will be frozen for the next two years, the government has said, in an announcement that will force the broadcaster to close services and make further redundancies.

The culture secretary, Nadine Dorries, will announce that the cost of an annual licence, required to watch live television and access iPlayer services, will remain at £159 until 2024 before rising slightly for the following three years.

The Tory Party here and the Republicans in the US are now basically the Steve Bannon parties. Traditional conservatives have allowed this to happen because, deep down, they'd prefer it to paying a little more income tax, seeing black faces on the telly or having to try and pronounce the Polish plumber's surname.

It hasn't happened, yet, so I suggest you save some tissues for when (or, indeed, if) it does.

I'm sure you'll be far happier with programmes that don't invite you to think, but I'm hopeful that you're in the minority.

Time will tell.

You got pissed with the BBC because the Teletubbies were too highbrow. Their command of the English language also far superior to yourself.

So the Government closes down one of the ways you openly scrounge off the taxpayers of the UK and you celebrate it :dunce:

Has he been drinking too much in the BBC boardroom?

Seems unlikely.

What the world needs is definitely less programs produced out of journalistic ambition, informative purposes or to satisfy those with niche minds. What the world absolutely needs more of are the kind of shows directly targeted at the type of audience who during commercial breaks will pick up the fantastic opportunity to buy a life time supply of hairdryers for ony £59.99 a month. Sensible decision. Cant wait for the same to be done in Sweden - investigative journalism out, "love on first date: fat mum edition" in.

As some posters, myself included, are alluding to its a good advert for the UK. Charging to see an advert is counter productive.

Except most people overseas can't see the advert, let alone the content. Some of the content ends up on Netflix, allowing them to tie up even more of the global market, and some of it is viewed for free (e,g, via a VPN) but most of the BBC's content simply isn't available outside the UK. And that's basicaly down to an archaic payment system that essentially means everyone in the UK is forced to pay for it, while the rest of the world is bizarrely forced not to pay for anything (even if they wanted to).

If it does happen, I for one would love to see. The funding model is so out dated. It was force the BBC to streamline and get rid of the dreadful waste that happens when you are guaranteed a certain amount of funding every year. The sooner they decriminalise not paying the fee the better. I do not see value in the licence fee.

As if there aren't enough reasons to despise this vile, corrupt, self serving awful government. The BBC is great, terrific value for money and respected the world over. My contempt for them and for anyone who would still vote for them is total.

The BBC are full of centrist journos who have bent over backwards to be nice to the Right to save their own skins. They’ve now been properly owned and while I shed a tear for public service broadcasting, I accept the BBC were too cowardly to defend it
